Men's Basketball Fends Off Eagles, 74-68 on the Road

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University men's basketball team earned a 74-68 conference win at Bridgewater College on Wednesday night.

The Generals (16-7, 9-5 ODAC) needed a Sam Wise (Winchester, Va. / Handley) three-pointer and a pair of Robert DiSibio (Newtown, Conn. / Sandy Hook) free throws in the final 16 seconds to hold off the Eagles (11-11, 6-7) who rallied back from a 12-point deficit and tied the game up at 64 each with 2:18 on the clock.

The Blue and White, who led for 35:48, used an eight-point run, capped at the 13:54 mark in the opening stanza, by a Drew Harrell (Collingswood, N.J. / Paul VI) jumper, that put the squad up by six. BC responded with an 8-0 run of their own and at the 7:13 mark the Eagles tied up the game at 19-19. After the pair of successful BC free throws, the Generals steadily increased their lead throughout the remainder of the half and led by 10, 34-24 at the break.

Two Bridgewater spurts (11-5 and 9-5) cut the visitors' lead down to three at 4:08 with some help from a W&L cold spell in the offensive end. Fortunately for Generals' fans, the team finished the game by producing points on seven of the final eight possessions. The two teams exchanged buckets for the last nine minutes until a DiSibio basket in the paint and a Jack Lewis (Rockville, Md./  Sidwell Friends) long-range jumper put up a five point cushion for the final lead of the night.

The Generals hit on 12 of their 14 free throws in the second half and were perfect in the opening stanza to capitalize on the 17 BC fouls which proved to be the difference maker as the clock expired.

DiSibio led all scorers with 29 points and sits nine tallies away from the 1,000 point club. He was perfect from the charity stripe (9-of-9) and added six rebounds to his stat line.

Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Radnor) and Wise finished in double digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Wise grabbed 10 boards for a double-double performance. Harrell also finished with 10 off the glass, and added six points on the offensive end.

W&L dominated the boards and out-rebounded BC 48-36. The Generals broke up eight Eagles' possessions with steals and recorded ten fast break points off the turnovers.

Liam Caswell posted a 16-point performance for the home team. Alec Topper, Andy Pack and Shod Smith all scored in double digits for the Eagles for a balanced attack.

W&L returns to the court on Wednesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. The Blue and White will host Randolph College in Holekamp.
