LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team dropped its first match of the season, snapping a five-match winning streak, by an 8-1 decision against No. 33 Sewanee on Sunday.
Despite the margin, the win did not come easily for the Tigers, as one of their doubles wins needed a tiebreaker and two singles victories went to three sets.
W&L (5-1) claimed victory at No. 2 doubles, courtesy of sophomores
Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) and
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) in an 8-7 (7-5) decision over Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey.
At the top doubles position, sophomore
Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) and senior
Evan Brady (Glen Head, N.Y. / Chaminade) took Quinn Wicklund and Jordan Theron to a tiebreak, before ultimately falling. In singles, Brady fell to Peyton Erck, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 2 while Hirshberg took Wicklund to three sets in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 loss at No. 4.
