LEXINGTON, Va. – After falling behind in doubles play, the Washington and Lee men's tennis team claimed four of the six singles matches to defeat No. 37 Christopher Newport, 5-4, on Friday on the first day of the Duchossois Tennis Invitational.
The Generals (5-0) trailed by a 2-1 match score after doubles play, with junior
Connor Coleman (Birmingham, Ala. / Briarwood Christian) and sophomore
James Kurani (Charlotte, N.C. / Providence Day) securing the lone win at No. 3, 8-4. Coleman added a second win of the day at No. 5 singles, as he overcame a 7-5 first-set loss with 6-3 and 6-2 wins in the next two sets to down Jake Dolphin.
Sophomore
Evan Erb (St. Louis, Mo. / MICDS) swept Alex Strause, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 in the most convincing of the Blue and White's singles wins. Sophomore
Will Kistler (Hilton Head, S.C. / Laurel Springs School) needed a third set to upend Ahun Vodela, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3, at No. 3, while sophomore
Eli Hirshberg (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek) rounded out the wins with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Nesh Kumaresan at No. 4.
The Generals will be off on Saturday, the second day of the Duchossois Tennis Invitational, before returning on Sunday to host No. 33 Sewanee at 10:00 am.
