No. 14 Lynchburg Fends Off Field Hockey in Second Half

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team was held in check by No. 14 University of Lynchburg, 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (11-1, 4-0 ODAC) paced the play for the entire first half and tallied one goal in each of the first two quarters to take down the Blue and White (5-5, 2-1). W&L didn't lay down in the second half and scored in the third to shift the momentum but were unable to convert a second goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Hornets dominated possession through the first half and initially scored at the 8:18 mark off a penalty corner. Aaryn Boatwright inserted the corner to Ryleigh Cameron at the top of the circle. From there she sent it to her left to Marlou Wendriks. Wendriks' hit fired past the defense for the tally.
  • In the second quarter, Lynchburg's Boatwright tipped a cross right to the stick of Olivia Van Metre who redirected it into the back of the net at the 26:52 mark.
  • The Generals had one scoring attempt in the first half, Allison Pitts tackled the ball away from a Lynchburg defender in the center of the scoring circle, turned back toward the goal and sent a shot toward the far post. Pitts' ball was just wide right and out of Margaret Covers' reach on the post.
  • W&L gained momentum in the second half with several fast-break transitions that looked promising for a score.
  • In the 39th minute of the contest, Pitts, Betty Boatwright and Zoe Dolfis put pressure on Kayla Brady with a flurry of shots. Brady made a stop on the initial effort, Boatwright was then blocked and Dolfis' shot resulted in a whistle.
  • In the fourth quarter, W&L took three more attpemts until Margaret Cover finally broke the goal line at 52:56. Cover picked up a loose ball after a Dolfis shot and Brady save at point-blank range; the first-year then redirected the ball back into the goal to cut the deficit in half.
  • Three minutes later Cover looked to add another goal to the scoresheet but the ball missed just right of the post.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • LYN outshot W&L 16-9 and had a 7-3 shots on goal adavantage.
  • Twelve of Lynchburg's attempts came in the first half. W&L owned an 8-4 advantage in the second half.
  • The Blue and White's goalkeepers, Abby Long and Julia McDonald combined for five saves. Long mad three stops in the opening half.
  • Defense on both sides was stout, the two teams only conceded five penalty corners. Lynchburg was awarded four of those with three in the first and second quarters.
  • For the visitors, Wendriks tallied seven shots, a match-high and three were on frame.
  • The loss snaps a three-game winning streak over the southern Hornets which includes a pair of ODAC Championship contests.
