No. 16 Shenandoah Rallies Late to Defeat Field Hockey

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team fell 2-1 to No. 16 Shenandoah University on Wednesday night's ODAC matchup. 

Down 1-0, the Blue and White (5-6, 2-2 ODAC) tied it up at the 51:52 mark but the Hornets (10-2, 3-1) scored the game-winner with 3:19 on the clock off a late penalty corner.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the third quarter, Gracie Wilkerson scored first for the home team. The Hornets were awarded a penalty corner at 35:38 and a Madison Short insert led to the opening tally.
  • The Generals tied up the game in the final stanza. Zoe Dolfis dribbled from the top of the circle to the right side and sent a cross into traffic. Sydney Baggett popped the ball up in front of the goal and Kate Ruffin tapped the ball in on the back post. 
  • Shenandoah was assessed a five-minute yellow card at 56:46 but scored on the woman-down penalty corner. Mallory Holup sent a ball to the far-post and Short was sitting on the back line to redirect the ball past the Generals' defense. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • W&L outshot SU 7-5 and evenly split the eight shots on goal. 
  • SU had a 4-2 advantage in awarded penalty corners. 
  • Abby Long and Julia McDonald split time in the cage and each made one stop. 
  • Ruffin took four shots and three were on target. 
  • Mairead McKibbin and Wilkerson both took two shots for the hosts.
