Baggett and Boatwright Connect in OT for Field Hockey Win

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey defeated Virginia Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime in Saturday afternoon's ODAC contest.

The Blue and White improved to 6-6 and 3-2 in conference thanks to a Betty Boatwright OT goal for her second score of the game. The Marlins (6-8, 2-3 ODAC) pressed the game into overtime by equalizing the contest at the 58:52 mark. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Betty Boatwright struck first for the Generals. W&L was awarded a penalty corner 6:57 into the contest. Kate Ruffin inserted the corner to the top of the circle for Zoe Dolfis who fed the pass to Boatwright on the left side of the circle. The ball found the back of the goal for the first tally. 
  • W&L held Va. Wes. scoreless for the first three stanzas but gave up the equalizer with 1:08 left in regulation. 
  • Lauren Hedspeth inserted a VWU corner Katherine Druiett who hit a high ball that was redirected into the goal by Ashlyn Boykin.
  • In overtime Sydney Baggett fed a ball from the left side of the goal to her classmate, Boatwright. From there the forward received the pass and shot around the Marlins defense for the game-winning tally. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • W&L outshot VWU 13-5 and owned an 11-8 advantage on corners.
  • Virginia Wesleyan keeper, Emma Moody, made seven stops in the 61 minutes of action. 
  • Boatwright took five shots, all five were on target with the two tallies. 
  • Dolfis and Ruffin each took two shots for W&L.
  • Katherine Druiett made three scoring attempts for VWU.
