Field Hockey Stings the Yellow Jackets, 5-1

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team racked up five goals on Wednesday night to defeat Randolph-Macon College, 5-1, in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest.

Betty Boatwright scored first for the Generals (7-6, 4-2 ODAC) in the opening stanza then Margaret Cover slipped the eventual game-winner past the Yellow Jackets (8-6, 3-3) defense to seal the result. Randolph-Macon was able to cut the deficit in half before the break but was unable to bounce back from a trio of W&L scores in the third quarter

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • At the 8:32 mark, Sydney Baggett sent a bouncing cross through the front of the cage, Boatwright collected the ball and tapped it in for the Blue and White's first tally.
  • Shelby Miller sent a pass in transition to the front line for Zoe Dolfis who dribbled through a pair of defenders. The first-year was able to ensure another score for W&L by passing the ball off to her left for Margaret Cover, throwing the RMC goalie off her balance. Cover found the open net for the second W&L goal of the night at 28:22.
  • The Yellow Jackets scored their only goal of the game 46 seconds later. In a scrum in front of the goal, Bree Dresler redirected a Cali Kujawa ball through the W&L defense to cut the deficit in half.
  • Four minutes into the second half, Paige Mammorella fed a crossed-ball into the scoring circle and Baggett was able to connect for the first insurance goal.
  • Allison Pitts then tallied the last two goals, the first was an unassisted tally and the second was assisted by Margaret Cover for the final score of the night. The first goal was at the 40:56 mark and the second came two minutes and two seconds later.
