Baggett Tallies Hat Trick in 5-0 Field Hockey Win at Ferrum

FERRUM Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team played to a 5-0 shutout at Ferrum on Saturday afternoon.

For the second time this week, W&L (8-6, 5-2 ODAC) tallied five goals on the offensive end and earned an ODAC win over the Panthers (2-13, 0-7).

The Blue and White lit up the scoreboard each quarter and held the Panthers scoreless. Sophomore Sydney Baggett scored on three of her five attempts to record her first collegiate hat trick and the defense recorded the fourth shutout of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Just 3:21 into the contest, W&L struck with what would prove to be the eventual game-winner. Betty Boatwright defended a Ferrum restart and tackled the ball away from FC. The sophomore sent a pass to classmate Sydney Baggett in transition, Baggett took a step inside the scoring circle and fired off a shot from 10 yards out.
  • The duo paired up for the second goal in similar fashion with Boatwright finding Baggett open inside the circle from the top at 20:01.
  • At the 21:48 mark first-year Zoe Dolfis created her own opportunity by evading a pair of defeders inside the scoring area and backhanded a shot past the diving FC keeper.
  • Baggett tallied her third goal of the game, a tipped ball from a Dolfis hit. Kate Ruffin inserted a penalty corner to Dolfis at the top of the circle for a direct shot. Baggett redirected the ball past the defenders for the hat trick score.
  • Amanda Brickner capped the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 56:15 mark. Brickner tapped in a loose ball after a flurry of action caught in front of the goalkeeper.
