Field Hockey Takes Down Maroons 4-0 for Bleed Blue Game

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team wrapped up the regular season home slate on Wednesday night with a 4-0 win over Roanoke College.

The Generals (9-6,6-2 ODAC) and Maroons (6-8, 4-4) were tightly contested in the first quarter, splitting just four shots between the two teams, before the Blue and White opened up the offense from the second quarter on.

W&L scored on three penalty corner plays and one unassisted tally to earn the win in front of a large Bleed Blue crowd; the victory marked the 16th-straight win over Roanoke College.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Six minutes into the second quarter the Generals were awarded a penalty corner and Emma Gatrell's first attempt was blocked by the Roanoke defense. Allison Pitts collected the loose ball and the Blue and White scored on the second attempt; Maddy Duggleby redirected the Allison Pitts feed for the first goal of the night.
  • Zoe Dolfis forced her way through multiple Roanoke defenders and persisted after her first shot was saved by Madison Wingerter. The second attempt from Dolfis was successful and put W&L ahead 2-0 32:16 into the contest.
  • At the 54:21 mark, Gatrell connected with Duggleby for her second goal of the night. W&L was awarded a penalty corner and Gatrell fired a shot at the near post where Duggleby was waiting for the redirect.
  • In the final corner of the night, Margaret Cover sent the insert to Ally Hoffmann at the top of the scoring circle, Hoffmann's direct hit zoomed past the corner defense for the fourth W&L tally.
