Field Hockey Claims Regular Season Finale Over EMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Washington and Lee University field hockey team earned a 4-0 win at Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon to wrap up the regular season. 

The Blue and White (10-6, 7-2 ODAC) scored once in each stanza to take down the Royals (4-14, 1-8) in the league contest. With the win, W&L assumed the third seed in the upcoming 2023 ODAC Field Hockey Tournament and will host a quarterfinal round matchup against an opponent to be determined later this evening. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just 1:35 into the contest Betty Boatwright found Kate Ruffin for the first tally of the game. Boatwright sent a pass inside from the top right of the scoring circle for Ruffin on the far post, who tapped in the bouncing ball. 
  • Allison Pitts dished out her first assist of the game at the 25:42 mark for a Zoe Dolfis goal to make it 2-0. Pitts crossed the ball in from the right corner of the end line to Dolfis waiting in the center.
  • W&L was awarded a penalty stroke at the 44:39 mark and Amanda Tan drained the opportunity inside the left post.
  • In the final stanza, Pitts found first-year Margaret Cover for the final score of the afternoon in the same fashion as the second quarter's goal.  

BY THE NUMBERS

  • WLU owned a 40-1 advantage in shots from 12 different players.
  • The Generals' recorded 21 attempts on target and nine players registered as shots on goal. 
  • W&L was awarded 14 penalty corners compared to EMU's one. 
  • Abby Long made one save, the only shot the Generals' keepers faced. Long split time with Julia McDonald
  • EMU keeper, Gracyn Arrudamade 16 stops including seven in the third stanza. Defender Cassidy Armstrong registered a defensive save as well. 
  • Dolfis dominated the score sheet with nine shots and five shots on goal. Pitts added six attempts and Boatwright registered five shots.
