Defense Shuts Down Roanoke in Field Hockey Quarterfinals

LEXINGTON, Va. - The third-seeded Washington and Lee University field hockey team advanced to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference semifinal round with a 3-0 win over sixth-seeded Roanoke College.

The Blue and White (11-6) defense held the Maroons (6-10) to just two shots all night and kept the ball in W&L's attacking end for nearly the entire contest.

The Generals will travel to second seed Shenandoah University on Thursday night. The two teams will face off at 6 p.m. as W&L looks to avenge a 2-1 regular season loss in Winchester.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Zoe Dolf received a pass just outside the top of the scoring circle then evaded a pair of defenders before sending a shot into the back of the net to score the eventual game-winning goal.
  • Paige Mammorella tacked on an insurance goal of her own. From the endline on the right side, the senior midfielder guided the ball through three defenders and snuck a goal through the legs of the keeper for her second goal of the season.
  • Betty Boatright tallied the final goal, the sophomore redirected a Kate Ruffin hit inside of the scoring circle for the third score of the night.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • WLU owned a 22-2 advantage in shots and recorded 16 shots on goal for the Generals.
  • Only three penalty corners were assessed on Tuesday night and W&L received two of those calls.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Kate Hall made 13 saves for RC in just her third match played all year.
  • Senior Abby Long didn't face a shot in the first half and Julia McDonald made a stop in her two shots faced in the second half.
  • Dolfis and Boatwright split ten shots and Allison Pitts added four.
  • All five of Boatwright's shots were on target, and Mamorella was three for three in shots and shots on goal.
