Field Hockey Falls in Semifinal Round at Shenandoah, 2-0

WINCHESTER, Va. - Second-seeded Shenandoah University defeated third-seeded Washington and Lee University 2-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference field hockey semifinal match on Thursday night.

The Hornets (16-2) scored a pair of goals off penalty corners in the third quarter to defeat the Generals (11-7) and will play in tournament's championship contest at top-seeded University of Lynchburg on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • At the 37:38 mark Farren Winter sent a shot into the middle of the scoring circle and Kaitlyn Nakamura redirected the ball away from traffic into the back of the goal from the left side of the defense.
  • Just over two minutes later, a penalty corner play set Elizabeth Ranberger up on the top of the circle and aimed for the far corner. Camryn DeLeva was waiting on the right side post and put the ball past the W&L defense for an insurance goal.
  • The home team kept pressure on the ball and made it difficult for the Generals' offensive transition to make it across midfield.
  • The Blue and White were held to three shots all game, two in the opening stanza and one in the second quarter; Shenandoah goalie Taylor Swann played the entire contest and tallied three stops on each of W&L's scoring attempts.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Senior goalkeeper Abby Long made three stops, all in the first quarter and saw three shots off-target in the second.
  • Julia McDonald saw eight SU shots in the second half and made a pair of stops at the beginning of the second half.
  • SU rattled off 15 shots and benefited from eight penalty corners. Mairead McKibbin put four shots on target to lead the Hornets while Farren Winter and DeLava added three shots each.
  • Kate Ruffin and Zoe Dolfis tallied the three shots for W&L, all on target for shots on goal.
