LEXINGTON, Va. - Returning to their home court for the first time since Sept. 19, the Washington and Lee University women's volleyball team used a third set comeback to sweep Guilford College in straight sets on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Set One | 25-12 W&L
- The Generals took a 6-4 lead early in the first set as Emery Goerig finished off a Allie Buchholz assist but the Quakers knotted the set at six with a kill from Kaci Johnson.
- Washington and Lee's offense found its footing right after the Quakers tied the set at six as they rattled off six-straight points to take a 12-6 lead. The run featured three Riley Debiec kills, a Grace Mitchener kill and a Mitchener service ace.
- The Blue and White took an eight point lead as Goerig finished off another Buchholz assist to give them a 15-7 lead.
- After the Quakers cut the lead to six, the Generals used a seven point swing to take the first frame 25-12. This run featured five Guilford errors and two Lillie Holcomb kills.
- Debiec led all players with five kills on 11 attempts for a .364 hitting percentage while Holcomb, Goerig and Stephanie Lynch each recorded two kills for the Generals.
- Madison Duvall led the Quakers with three kills on five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high ten assists while digging out three attacks. Sydney Heifner and Vivi Vasquez each dug out three attacks for W&L.
- Maddi Page dished out a team-high four assists while Madison Bozarth and Natalie Moore each dug out four attacks.
Set Two | 25-17 W&L
- The second set started with back and forth action before the Generals went on a four point run to take a 10-6 lead. Goerig and Mitchener each finished off a Buchholz assist during the run.
- After Guilford's Natalie Moore cut the lead to three with a kill, Washington and Lee used a six point swing to jump out to a 16-7 lead. Goerig, Buchholz and Debiec each recorded a kill during the Generals' stretch.
- The Generals took a 24-14 lead after a Holcomb kill but the Quakers used a three point stretch to cut the lead to seven. Despite the last ditch effort, Goerig put the set away as she finished off a Buchholz assist to take the set 25-17.
- Natalie Moore of Guilford posted a set-high four kills. She attempted 15 attacks for a .200 hitting percentage. Holcomb and Goerig led the Generals with three kills, Goerig posted a set-high .429 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz dished out a set-high ten assists on 37 attempts for a .270 hitting percentage. Maddi Page of Guilford dished out five assists on 23 attempts for a .217 hitting percentage.
- Madison Bozarth dug out a set-high ten attacks for the Quakers while Natalie Moore recorded seven digs. Vasquez dug out a team-high nine attacks for the Generals.
- Debiec, Lynch and Goerig each recorded a set-high two blocks while Buchholz and Mitchener each recorded a block.
Set Three | 25-22 W&L
- After the Blue and White took an 8-7 lead, the Quakers used a Lacie Evans kill and a Madison Bozarth service ace to take a 11-8 lead.
- The Generals cut the deficit to one but back-to-back service aces from Maddie Page helped put Guilford up by four.
- Guilford maintained a 18-14 lead late in the third set but the Generals took a 19-18 lead as Debiec recorded four-straight kills to take a 19-18 lead.
- Debiec finished off a Buchholz assist to take a 23-22 lead but Ryan Taylor, Michener and Holcomb recorded back-to-back blocks to complete the comeback and take the third set 25-22.
- Debiec posted a set-high seven kills on 15 attempts for a .467 hitting percentage. Natalie Moore led the Quakers with four kills while Chrisbel Alcantara recorded three kills on 13 attempts for a .154 hitting percentage.
- Buchholz dished out another set-high 11 assists while Maddi Page of Guilford dished out a team-high nine assists. Both Buchholz and Page had a .333 setting percentage during the set.
- Vasquez posted a set-high nine digs while Mitchener, Madison Bozarth and Lydia Saunders of Guilford each dug out five attacks in the set.
- Taylor recorded a set-high four blocks while Holcomb stuffed three Guilford attacks.
W&L GAME NOTES
- The Generals snapped a four game losing streak to improve to 13-6 on the season while moving to 5-3 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play.
- The Blue and White won their fourth-straight match against the Quakers while improving to 40-9 in the all-time series.
- W&L recorded 36 kills on 117 attempts for a .214 hitting percentage, they led five of the six team categories including blocks (10), assists (36) and digs (64).
GUILFORD GAME NOTES
- The Quakers fall to 14-6 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
- Guilford posted a season-low .017 hitting percentage as they recorded 25 kills on 118 attempts. GC led the match with five service aces.
TOP PERFORMERS
- Debeic led all players with 14 kills on 34 attempts for a .382 hitting percentage. Goerig recorded eight kills for a career-high .571 hitting percentage.
- Natalie Moore led the Quakers with eight kills while Madison Duvall and Chrisbel Alcantara each recorded five kills for Guilford.
- Buchholz dished out a match-high 31 assists, this is her eighth game this season with over 30 assists in a match. Maddi Page led the Quakers with 18 assists.
- Taylor posted a match-high four blocks in her one set of action. Michener, Debiec, Goerig, and Lynch each recorded three blocks.
- Vasquez dug out a match-high 21 attacks in her three sets of action while Mitchener recorded 11 digs for the Generals. Madison Bozarth led the Quakers with 19 digs while Natalie Moore dug out 16 attacks.
