Agbeyegbe scores hat trick, Generals cruise past Cougars, 3-0

DANVILLE, Va. – Junior Weyimi Agbeyegbe recorded his second career hat trick on Sunday afternoon to propel the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 3-0 win at Averett.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Agbeyegbe got things rolling in the 26th minute with his second goal of the season. The play began in the Averett (5-3-3, 2-1-1 ODAC)) defensive half as the keeper booted the ball up the right side to a midfielder. Sophomore Matteo Adler was wise to the play and stepped in front of the ensuing pass to start a fastbreak. In a two-on-one, and with plenty of space to work with, Adler found Agbeyegbe to his right, and Agbeyegbe buried the shot.

In the 61st minute, junior Asa Tuke found himself with the ball up the right side, where he located a cutting Brad Dulin about 30 yards out. Dulin flicked the ball on towards the top of the 18 where Agbeyegbe was making a run. Agbeyegbe settled the ball with one touch and fired a shot just inside the left post to secure the brace.

The hat trick was then completed in the 77th minute as the Generals (5-2-3, 3-1-0 ODAC) quickly went end-to-end for the goal. A Will Joseph punt was claimed deep in Cougar territory by first-year Matthew Jenkins, who hit a slick back-heel pass up to Dulin. Dulin used one touch to get past a defender on the right side, and found Agbeyegbe just to the right of the penalty spot. Agbeyegbe then shot on his first touch inside the left post to put the finishing touches on the win.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Agbeyegbe's three-goal effort boosts his season goal total to four, while his point total goes up to 10. Dulin received credit for assists on the second and third goals of the day, his first collegiate assists and points, while Tuke added an assist as well on the second goal. Agbeyegbe finished the game with six total shots, and he put five attempts on goal.

The W&L defensive unit held strong all game, allowing just six shots. Joseph made stops on the two attempts that the Cougars put on goal.

Jonthomas Buckley led the Averett attack with three shots, including two on goal, while Tyler Yates allowed three goals and made five saves across the 90 minutes of play.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
With his three goals and six points on the day, Agbeyegbe sits just three goals and three points outside of the W&L men's soccer program career Top 10 lists. The junior now has 25 goals and 64 points across 55 career appearances.

Prior to today's game, Agbeyegbe also had W&L's most recent hat trick, as he scored three times in the team's 6-1 ODAC Semifinal win over Virginia Wesleyan last season.

TEAM STATS:
The Generals held a sizeable advantage in possession and shots in the first half, as a 12-1 margin helped them finish the game with a 20-6 shot count. The Blue and White also earned seven corner kicks to five for the home side, with each team taking just one in the second half.

The Generals will remain on the road in their next contest, a 7:00 p.m. Wednesday kick-off at Hampden-Sydney.
