Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer tames HSC, wins fifth game in last six

HAMPDEN SYDNEY, Va. – After a hat trick in his previous outing, junior Weyimi Agbeyegbe netted two more goals on Wednesday night to lead the Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 2-1 road win against the Tigers of Hampden-Sydney.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Just like on Saturday, it did not take long for Agbeyegbe to find the back of the net, as he scored just 59 seconds into Wednesday's contest to give W&L (6-2-3, 4-1-0 ODAC) the early lead. The score came after the Tigers (4-5-2, 1-3-0 ODAC) turned the ball over in their defensive end on a throw-in, as junior Asa Tuke poked the ball free and into the possession of senior Grant McCarty. From just outside the top of the 18, McCarty found Agbeyegbe in the box, who took one touch to get the ball to his right foot for a goal just inside the right post.

The W&L lead doubled in the 10th minute when the Generals went on a fast-attacking possession. The ball was played up the left side and given off to first-year Brad Dulin, who fired a shot across the goal. His attempt bounced off the right post, where Agbeyegbe was there for the follow-up and the rebound goal.

The Tigers got one goal back in the 19th minute, as the Generals failed to clear a bounding ball on the right side of the box. HSC's Tyler Petz then managed to find Pierce Boerner, who redirected the ball across the goal and into the left netting.

Over the course of the final 25 minutes of the first half, the Tigers got three more shots off, but two missed the target and one was saved by W&L sophomore Will Joseph. After halftime, the Generals' defense clamped down on the home team by not allowing another shot until the 74th minute. That shot by Jackson Burkhart, as well as another by Mo Wumpini in the 80th minute, were both blocked. Joseph made an additional save in the 83rd minute, while the Tigers' final shot missed the mark in the 87th as W&L hung on for the win.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Agbeyegbe continued his hot play with two goals on a game-high eight shots. McCarty finished the night with four total attempts and two on goal, while he and Dulin each assisted on a goal. Joseph covered all 90 minutes of action in the W&L goal and made three saves.

Boerner's only shot of the game found the back of the net, while Petz logged an assist and one shot. Wumpini tallied a team-high three shots to two attempts from Burkhart. HSC keeper Garrett Hodges made six saves in 90 minutes of action.

NOTEWORTHY POINTS:
Agbeyegbe has scored five goals over the last two games for the Blue and White to get his season total up to six. In doing so, he boosted his career goal total to 27, which is just one away from moving into a five-way tie for ninth on the program's all-time goals list. Additionally, Agbeyegbe now has 68 career points to put him in 10th place in program history and just one from tying former teammate Michael Kutsanzira '23 for ninth.

Not only has Agbeyegbe scored five goals across his last two outings, but he has now accounted for five consecutive team goals. No player since the beginning of the 2002 W&L men's soccer season had scored more than four consecutive team goals prior to Agbeyegbe's current streak.

TEAM STATS:
Both teams took six shots in the first half, but the final margin widened to 19-10 in favor of the Blue and White after a 13-4 advantage in the second half. W&L earned nine corner kicks in the game, including seven in the second half, and it conceded just one.
