Field Hockey Posts 5-0 Victory Over Sweet Briar

Nine Women Tally Points in Non-conference Contest

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 10 Washington and Lee University field hockey team defeated Sweet Briar College 5-0 on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference matchup.

The home-opener for the Blue and White (1-1) featured nine different women recording a point in the shutout contest against the Vixens (1-2).

To break open the game, in the first quarter Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) dished out a Betty Boatwright (Washington, D.C./ Georgetown Visitation) goal just 46 seconds into the contest.

Just over two minutes later, Tysinger added one of her own, Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) controlled the ball from the right side of the goal and fed a pass through traffic. Tysinger was all alone on the far post making for an easy shot to bring the game to 2-0.

The Vixens didn't have many scoring opportunities in the contest but with 30 seconds on the clock in the initial quarter, a drive deep into the Generals' defensive end for the first time saw time expire before the offense could get a shot off.

Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va./ Washington-Lee) and Kate Ruffin (Virginia Beach. Va. Norfolk Academy) combined for the hosts' third goal to own a solid advantage heading into the break. In the third quarter, a Ruffin penalty corner insert found the stick of Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./ Glenwood) on the top of the scoring circle. The reigning ODAC Player of the Year spotted first-year player Amanda Tan (Richmond, Va./ Collegiate) on the far post, she was able to re-direct the ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

The last scoring play for the Blue and White came in the final quarter. Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation) created chaos in front of the goal, two rapid-fire shots allowed junior Allison Pitts (Reisterstown, Md./ McDonogh) to catch the SBC goalkeeper off balance and out of position. Pitts collected a loose Fitzgerald rebound to notch the final goal of the evening.

The Generals owned a 39-1 shot advantage over the visiting Vixens, 19 of which were on goal. SBC recorded 14 saves in the contest while both goalies for W&L split time in the cage. Neither junior Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo./ Pembroke) nor first-year Julia McDonald (Guilford, Conn./ Guilford) saw a shot on frame in the defensive shutout.

All 27 women on the Blue and White roster saw playing time in the home-opener.

Up next, the Generals will take a trip to Kentucky, making stops at Transylvania and Centre for noon contests on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
