BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Washington and Lee University volleyball team fell in three sets to crosstown rivals, Southern Virginia University (25-16, 25-21, 25-17).
The Knights (8-6) evened up the non-conference season series with the Generals (7-7) in the Barn on Tuesday night after the Blue and White won the first meeting in five sets during the W&L Invitational on September 10.
SVU took a 6-1 lead in the opener off four kills and two service aces from the home team. W&L scored five straight to bring the score to 18-14 in favor of the Knights but two more SVU three-point runs held off the comeback and secured the first series.
Set two had the Generals up with the 12-7 advantage but SoVa battled back to tie it up at 20 all then scored five in row after a Blue and White point to take the set 25-21.
Three runs of four or more points by the Knights catapulted SVU to the match point and snapped a five game skid dating back to 2019. Tonight's win for Southern Virginia marks just the second victory in the 31 matchups between the two programs.
Avery Myers (New York, N.Y. / Poly Prep Country Day School) led WLU in kills and
Ashley Webb (Thousand Oaks, Calif. Westlake) recorded three aces and added 13 assists.
Caroline Gard (Naperville, Ill. / Benet Academy) notched 12 digs on Tuesday and needs just seven digs to sit atop the program record book for career digs.
