Field Hockey Clips Mary Washington, 8-0

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 15 Washington and Lee University field hockey team wrapped up the non-conference slate with an 8-0 victory over the University of Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals (7-1) notched a pair of goals in each quarter before the weather prematurely ended the contest against the Eagles (3-4).

Sunday's game marked the seventh straight victory and sixth shutout in that timeframe with Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) and Julia McDonald (Guilford, Conn. / Guilford) splitting time in the goal. The two combined for five saves to keep a clean sheet.

Seniors Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./ Glenwood) and Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) notched goals in the opening 15 minutes. Peyton Tysinger  (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) assisted the first goal and Tobeason corralled a loose ball, off a saved Muneses' shot, to rattle in the second tally.

It took just forty seconds of play after the first intermission for Tobeason to find the back of the net again, this time she used some help from Betty Boatwright (Washington, D.C./ Georgetown Visitation) who found the forward on the back post.

Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va./ Washington-Lee) came off the bench and made an immediate impact, she tallied the contests' fourth goal at the 27:35 mark and gave the Blue and White a substantial lead at the midway point.

After halftime, a corner play turned into the fifth goal of the afternoon. Tysinger Inserted the ball from the left post to Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation) at the top of the scoring circle. A bang-bang pass from Fitzgerald to Muneses to Boatwright on the far right in order to change the field, she took two dribbles into space and fired her shot past the defense.

Fitzgerald recorded an unassisted tally at the 36:31 mark, she took on nearly the entire Eagles back line, she dribbled through four UMW defenders for the score.

Sarah Allen (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) etched her mark on the stat line in the final quarter when she scored both goals. Her first was an immediate shot off of a Kate Ruffin (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) penalty corner insert. The second tally was a clean-up effort; first-year Amanda Brickner (ChapeL Hill, N.C. / Carrboro) had her shot saved and Allen positioned herself on the back post to put away the loose ball.

WLU owned the 26-9 shots advantage and 18 of those were on frame to force Bailey McNabb to make nine stops for the visitors. The home team had a slight edge in corners 7-5

Fitzgerald took a game-high five shots with Boatwright and Muneses notched four each. Everyone on the Generals roster, for the second day in a row, saw action on W&L Turf Field.

Muneses' assist today put her atop the record book with 24 career assists to tie Kendall Korte '08.

The Generals open ODAC play on Saturday, October 1 at noon against Ferrum College for Parents and Family Weekend.
