No. 19 Lynchburg Rallies Past No. 13 Field Hockey

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The No. 13 Washington and Lee University field hockey team dropped a 3-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest at the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday evening.

The No. 19 Hornets (9-2, 1-0 ODAC) converted on one of 12 shots taken in the final stanza and rallied back from an early two-goal deficit to hand the Generals (7-2, 0-1) a loss in the first conference action for both teams.

In the 2021 ODAC Championship rematch, the Blue and White struck first and knocked in two goals in the second quarter when Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) and Peyton Tysinger  (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) each scored within three minutes of one another.

W&L had several legitimate scoring opportunities in the first half but was unable to convert them into tallies on the scoreboard due to Kayla Brady's stellar game in goal for LYN.

Brady's scoresheet was first tarnished by Tysinger, who collected a loose rebound and placed her shot in the upper right corner above the reach of the keeper. Shortly after, Emma Gatrell (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Latin) found Tobeason on a through ball, the senior forward then slipped the ball past Brady on the left post.

Thirty seconds after the Generals took a 2-0 lead, Aaryn Boatwright retaliated and converted a penalty corner opportunity into a goal to cut the difference in half and the score was 2-1 at the mid-way point.

Out of the intermission, the Hornets tied up the contest, LYN converted on another corner play. This time, Emily Yanes and Brittany Claybaugh picked up the assists for Sarah McCollum for the score with a quick insert, stop, and shot from the home team.

It was only a matter of time before the Hornets were able to capitalize on one of the dozen shots taken in the final stanza. Yanes went on to score the game-winning goal with just under eight minutes left to play on a loose ball in front of the cage.

LYN outshot W&L 26-11 and owned an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners. Twelve of Lynchburg's opportunities were on target compared to the Generals' six shots on goal.

Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) made nine stops in the contest, five in the final outing.

The Blue and White will host Ferrum on Monday, October 10 at 7 p.m., a contest that was originally scheduled for Parents Weekend but was altered due to rain and winds last Saturday.
