LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 16 Washington and Lee University field hockey team took down Eastern Mennonite 8-2 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference contest on Wednesday night.
The Generals (8-2, 1-1 ODAC) had nine players record points in the victory over the Royals (7-5, 1-3) and scored eight consecutive goals before conceding a pair of goals that got EMU on the board in the final 15 minutes.
The first six goals of the contest were unassisted tallies from
Amanda Tan (Richmond, Va. / Collegiate),
Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y. / Groton),
Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md. / Georgetown Visitation),
Betty Boatwright (District of Columbia / Georgetown Visitation),
Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va. / Washington-Lee) and
Ally Hoffmann (West Chester, Pa. / Unionville).
Tan's goal was the only shot that got past the EMU defense in the first quarter, the next five came in the second stanza. Tobeason's goal came on a stroke opportunity and she took advantage, her shot found the left corner.
Allison Pitts (Reisterstown, Md. / McDonogh) and
Sydney Baggett (Poquoson, Va. / Poquoson) recorded goals in the third to round out the Blue and Whites scoring.
Pitts redirected a Baggett feed into the middle of the circle on the first possession of the second half and
Amanda Brickner (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Carrboro) then set up Baggett for the next tally in the 39th minute.
Brandy Troutman and Courtney Crawford got on the board for EMU in the final stanza, both off corner plays and assisted by Elizabeth Longacre.
W&L outshot EMU 34-6, including an 18-0 slide in the opening 15 minutes and a 9-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Julia McDonald (Guilford, Conn. / Guilford) made two stops in split action with
Abby Long (JKansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill).
The Blue and White will return to the W&L Turf Field on Saturday afternoon in a 1 p.m. contest against Virginia Wesleyan University. The October 15 ODAC matchup will be senior day to celebrate the team's seven who will be graduating from Washington and Lee.
