Field Hockey Nets Ten on the Marlins for Senior Day

Washington and Lee Field Hockey Downed the Marlins 10-1 on Senior Day

LEXINGTON, Va. - The No. 16 Washington and Lee University field hockey team celebrated senior day with a 10-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

Seven Generals (9-2, 2-1 ODAC), Sarah Allen (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run), Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation), Grace MacDonald (Bluemond, Va. / Foxcroft), Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./ Glenwood), Alexis Parks (Arlington, Va. / Washington-Lee), Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton), and Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) were all honored at midfield prior to earning a 10-1 conference win over the Marlins (2-9, 0-4).

Allen, Parks, Tobeason and Tysinger combined for seven of the Generals' 10 goals and played a part in each of the seven goals scored in the opening 15 minutes.

Three minutes after the senior day ceremony, Parks tallied the first goal for W&L when classmate Tobeason found her on the opposite post for the lead.

Tysinger then went on to score the next three with assists from Allen and Sophomore Maddy Duggleby (Fayetteville, N.Y. / Fayetteville-Manlius) before completing the hat trick on an unassisted effort.

Freddie Tobeason gave the Generals a 5-0 lead at the 7:54 mark with an unassisted goal of her own.

Parks played a hand in the final two goals of the stanza, assisting Kate Ruffin's (Virginia Beach, Va. / Norfolk Academy) tip into the back of the net. Tobeason then connected with Parks in similar fashion to the game's opening goal to end the first quarter.

In the second period, Amanda Brickner (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Carrboro) tallied the lone goal and extended the lead to 8-0 at the midway point.

Senior Sarah Allen celebrated her senior day with an unassisted goal in the third quarter to notch three total points in the contest.

Then, first-year duo Sydney Baggett (Poquoson, Va. / Poquson) and Betty Boatwright (Washington, D.C./ Georgetown Visitation) connected for the tenth goal of the contest.

Late in the final quarter, Willow Baker was able to get on the board for the Marlins and prevent a Generals shutout. She was posted up on the back corner and redirected an Olivia Windslow feed past the defense to bring the score to 10-1.

Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) and Julia McDonald (Guilford, Conn. / Guilford) split the time in the cage again, alternating quarters.

W&L outshot VWU 32-3 and were relatively even on penalty corners, the Marlins had a slight 4-3 advantage for corner opportunities.

Thus far, the seniors have led W&L field hockey to a 45-13 record over their four years and a 23-4 record in ODAC competition including an undefeated regular season during their junior year (2021). That year, the squad lifted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship trophy and has held their opponents to a 1.03 goals against average and 29 defensive shutouts in the 58 games they suited up in Blue and White.

Up next, the field hockey team will travel to Roanoke College on Wednesday, October 19 at 4 p.m. for an ODAC contest.
