No. 14 Field Hockey Sinks No. 18 Captains, 2-1

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The No.14 Washington and Lee field hockey team used a late goal in the fourth quarter to sink the No. 18 Captains, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.

The Generals (5-1) and Christopher Newport (4-3) were tied up at one a piece for two thirds of the contest before senior Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) gave the visitors a one-goal advantage in the 51st minute.

The non-conference win extended the Blue and White's winning streak to five games and is the third win in the last four matchups with Christopher Newport on the turf.

CNU struck first, the Captains, who earned five penalty corner attempts in the first quarter alone, put themselves on the board off the fourth corner taken. The inserter for CNU, Chloe Thompson, sent her pass to Katie Abendschoen to record the game's initial tally at the 8:12 mark.

The Generals broke up the ensuing corner attempt, two minutes later, and scored off a familiar play for the Blue and White faithful.

Flying in to break up the inserted pass, Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./ Glenwood) carried the ball out of the critical scoring area. Freddie Tobeason and Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) watched the fast-break opportunity unfold from the center circle and flanked both wings ahead of Muneses. Dribbling through traffic, she led a feed up the right side for Tobeason. Tysinger received a pass through the arc after Tobeason drew the Captains' defense out wide to stop the breakaway, then scored on an abandoned net.

For the second day in row, the three seniors put together a textbook counter-attack and tied up the game, 1-1.

With ten minutes left in the contest, Tobeason broke open the game and notched the game-winner. The forward possessed the ball in the top left portion of the scoring circle and used strong stick skills to create space for herself for the wind-up. Tobeason's shot found the back of the goal, just inside the right post.

The game-winner capped a 5-point weekend for Tobeason with two assists recorded on Saturday.

Washington and Lee only took 10 shots on Sunday but forced the Captains goalkeeping pair to make a difference in the contest. Of the eight shots on target, CNU accounted for six saves to include a defensive save from Thompson to keep the Generals' offense at bay.

Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) and Julia McDonald (Guilford, Conn. / Guilford) continued to split time for the Generals.  Long was in the cage for three quarters and McDonald played the second stanza.

CNU took 13 shots but only placed three on goal; Long and Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation) recorded the two saves for the Blue and White.

The win over the regional rival is just the fourth time W&L has taken down the Captains. CNU owns a 13-4 series record but Sunday's win is the second in a row for WLU. In 2021, the Generals came out on top after a high scoring, 5-4, game in Lexington.

Next weekend, the Blue and White will host Kenyon on Saturday at noon and Mary Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m., the last two non-conference dates, before starting Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on October 1 against Ferrum.
