DANVILLE, Ky. - The NFHCA No. 10 Washington and Lee University field hockey team will return from the Bluegrass state with two wins this weekend having defeated Centre 2-0 in a non-conference matchup on Sunday.
The Generals (3-1) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 48 seconds left in the first quarter on an overcast and windy afternoon at Centre (1-2).
Before the storms had a chance to rumble in, Kailey Fitzgerald (Chevy Chase, Md./ Georgetown Visitation) set up the initial tally with a strong pass inside the scoring circle from the top. Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) redirected the ball into the back of the net past a cluster of Colonels.
The Blue and White owned an 8-4 advantage in penalty corner opportunities and converted one of those second quarter set plays into a goal. Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va./ Norfolk Academy) inserted the ball toward Tess Muneses (Howard County, Md./ Glenwood), her shot lifted past the keeper and gave W&L a 2-0 lead at the break.
Washington and Lee maintained possession for a majority of the contest making quick passes throughout the levels of play to get 26 shots off of W&L sticks and put 16 of those scoring attempts on frame. On the other end of the field, the Generals defense held the Colonels to just two shots all afternoon, neither of which posed a threat to Abby Long (Kansas City, Mo./ Pembroke Hill). The shutout marks the third-straight contest holding their opponents to zero goals, outscoring opposing teams 14-0 in the past seven days.
Tobeason recorded a team high nine shots with six on goal with Muneses right behind her taking six shots, four on target. Centre goalkeeper, Carlie McKenry, came up with 14 saves to help keep the hosts within reach of the Generals offensive firepower throughout the game.
The No. 10 Generals return to W&L Turf Field on Saturday, September 17, for a 1 p.m. contest. W&L will host Dickinson College, the two teams last met a year ago and the Blue and White earned a 2-0 win on the road thanks to Grace Weise '22 and Tobeason goals. Muneses and Paige Mammorella (Louisville, Ky./Manual) set up both scores for the Generals in the 2021 contest.
