No. 2 Johns Hopkins Tops No. 10 Field Hockey

A John Hopkins Hatrick put the Blue Jays ahead of the Generals in NFHCA Top-10 Season Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. - The No. 10 Washington and Lee University field hockey team opened up the 2022 season with a 5-2 loss at No. 2 Johns Hopkins University on Thursday afternoon.

Hopkins benefited from an Abby Birk hat trick, spanning over just four minutes of play, to pull away from W&L in a non-conference and NFHCA Top-10 matchup.

The Blue Jays, 2021 NCAA runner-ups, stopped a Generals scoring attempt and sent the ball up the right line. The counter attack featured a breakaway on the right wing and a shot to the opposite post. Siena Urbanski tallied the initial goal for the Blue Jays.

The Blue and White evened up the score to start off the second quarter when Freddie Tobeason (New York, N.Y./ Groton) found Betty Boatwright (District of Columbia, Georgetown Visitation) in the center of the circle during the transition down to the offensive half. Boatwright, a first-year, recorded her first collegiate goal.

With the score tied at one-a-piece, Birk spouted off three straight for the home team. With 2:15 left to play in the second quarter, she scored off a corner after taking a few dribbles from the right side then squeezed the shot into the left post. After the break, the Blue Jays found themselves with another corner opportunity and Birk scored off an Anna Scott pass. Birk went on to record the hat trick and give the home team a 4-1 lead just 65 seconds later.

In the fourth quarter, Hopkins slipped another Urbanksi goal past the the Blue and White defense. The Generals were able to get another tally on the board with 8:13 remaining in the contest, Peyton Tysinger (Norfolk, Va. / Norfolk Academy) tapped a Tobeason pass into the far post.

Hopkins outshot W&L 26-8 and held a 17-4 penalty corner advantage. Abby Long recorded six stops.

The Blue and White are back in action on Sunday afternoon in a 3 p.m. home contest against Sweet Briar College.
