Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) and sophomore attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) combined for 10 points to lead the fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a thrilling 13-11 victory over 12th-ranked Wesleyan (Conn.) in the third round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday.
The win improves the Generals to 19-2 overall this season, which ties the program record for wins in a season, set in 2017. The Cardinals end their season at 14-5 overall.
Leading by a 10-9 score heading into the fourth quarter, the Generals pushed their lead to three with six and a half minutes left after goals by Bishop and sophomore attacker
Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley School). The Cardinals then responded with two goals of their own over the next four minutes, both from sophomore attacker Lauren Baine.
With 1:20 left in the game, sophomore midfielder
Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) knifed through the Wesleyan defense and scored W&L's final goal, giving the team their 13-11 lead. Sophomore attacker
Alex Petras (Manhasset, N.Y. / Manhasset) then claimed the ensuing draw control, and the Generals ran the remainder of the clock out to clinch the win.
Wesleyan opened the game by scoring the contest's first two goals, including one by Baine. W&L then scored three of the next four goals to tie the game, before Wesleyan junior midfielder Kate Balicki put the Cardinals back up, 4-3.
Bishop then kickstarted a 6-1 run for the Generals with three straight goals, as the team pulled ahead by a 9-5 mark with 10:50 to play in the third. The Cardinals answered, however, by ending the third on a 4-1 run, with two goals by junior attacker Olivia Lai, to bring the score to 10-9 going into the final quarter.
Bishop and Faria led the W&L offense with five points each. Bishop scored five goals, her second game in the last three with at least that many. Faria scored four goals, including three in the second half, and she added an assist to post a new season high in points. Junior attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) also had a strong offensive game, with four points on four assists.

Caroline Hall (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School) picked up a team-high four ground balls in the game, while sophomore defender
Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) had a balanced stat line of three ground balls, two caused turnovers and three draw controls. In goal, sophomore
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) (18-2) played all 60 minutes and made three saves.
Junior midfielder Kendall Mittleman logged a Wesleyan-high five points on one goal and four assists, while Baine finished the contest with four goals. Junior midfielder Lucy Gretsky recorded a game-high five draw controls and junior defender Erin Trotta caused three turnovers. Senior goalkeeper Abby Wolk (13-4) started and made two saves during the first half, before senior Corin Grady made three saves in the second half.
Shots in the game favored the Generals by a 23-20 margin, and W&L also committed five fewer turnovers than Wesleyan (23-18). Draw controls were even at 14 per team, while the Generals held a 22-14 advantage in ground balls.
The Generals advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals on Sunday, where they will face host and fourth-ranked Gettysburg at Clark Field at 1:00 pm.
