LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team scored the final six runs of the ballgame to earn a 10-5 home win over Bridgewater on Wednesday evening.
Trailing by a score of 5-4 after the top of the fifth, senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) gave W&L (12-13, 7-8 ODAC) the lead back for good when he ripped a two-run home run over the left field fence.
The Generals added three runs in the bottom of the eighth when junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) scored on a ground out, sophomore designated hitter
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) scored on a passed ball and Wickman scored on an infield single by sophomore shortstop
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School). W&L's final run came on a sacrifice fly to right from junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va. / James Madison).
The Eagles (17-10, 4-5 ODAC) put a pair of runs on the board in the first inning, but junior right fielder
John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J. / Delaware Valley Regional) tied the game in the second with a two-run single to right center. Both sides scored two runs in the fourth, with Perkins driving in both W&L runs on a single, before Bridgewater gained a 5-4 advantage in the fifth on a single to right center from junior designated hitter Collin Reid.
Bridgewater was held off the board over its last four innings on offense courtesy of first-year right-hander
Evan Blair's (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) pitching. Blair picked up his first collegiate save, as he fired four shutout innings and allowed five hits. Junior
Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C. / Ravenscroft School) (2-0) earned the win after working the fifth inning and allowing one run.
Wickman finished the game with two hits and he also scored three times. Raymond and Perkins drove in three runs each, and junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) notched two hits and a run, including a lead-off triple in the ninth inning ahead of Perkins' sac fly.
Reid and senior left fielder Jarret Biesecker finished with two hits, one run and one RBI each to pace the Bridgewater offense. Senior Brett Tharp also went 2-for-4, and he pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits.
Junior Bowe Rogers (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Eagles, as the reliever entered in the fourth and tossed 1.2 innings, while allowing two runs on four hits.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday, April 16, when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for an ODAC doubleheader slated to begin at 12:00 pm.
