VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Senior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) broke a 1-1 tie in the 11th inning of game two to give the Washington and Lee baseball team a 6-1 win, following a 15-6 victory in game one to sweep Virginia Wesleyan on the road on Saturday.
With game two tied, 1-1, heading into the 11th inning, Bassi laced the go-ahead, two-run double into left center field to give the Generals (14-13, 9-8 ODAC) their final lead of the game. Sophomore
Jacob Jackson (Norfolk, Va./Maury) then singled to center to score Bassi, before sophomore third baseman
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) later plated two runs on a single to cap a five-run 11th inning.
W&L scored a run in the fourth inning to take an initial 1-0 lead, as sophomore designated hitter
Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) hit a sacrifice fly to left. Sophomore left hander
Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) retired the first eight hitters he faced and kept the Marlins (15-13-1, 5-8-1 ODAC) off the board through seven innings. In the eighth, a single, a walk and a wild pitch put runners on second and third with no outs, as junior catcher Marr Sinko then hit a sac fly to center to tie the game.
First-year
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va./James Madison) relieved Haller after the sac fly, and he got two strikeouts to get out of the inning with the game remained tied. Blair proceeded to finish out the contest and keep VWU off the board to earn his third win of the season.
The Generals were quick to put two runs on the board in the opener, as junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) plated a pair of runners with a double in the first. After the Marlins scored three in the bottom half of the first to gain a 3-2 lead, W&L outscored VWU, 13-3, the rest of the way to cruise to the win.
W&L had built up a 7-4 lead heading to the sixth inning when they struck for six runs in the frame to put the game out of reach. The six runs came across on four hits, highlighted by a two-run home run to center off the bat of sophomore shortstop
Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington). Junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) added to the lead in the eighth with a two-run blast, before sophomore catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va./John Champe) drove in the team's final run on a single in the ninth.
Salvino and Perkins finished game one with four RBI each, as the two combined to go 7-for-11 at the plate with three doubles and Perkins' second home run of the season. Zulueta's eighth-inning blast in game one was the first of his career, as he went 3-for-5 with three RBI in game one. Bassi logged a 4-for-9 day between the two games, with two hits in both contests, and he scored three times in game one and drove in two in the second game.
First-year
John Benner (McLean, Va./St. Albans) (4-0) earned his fourth win of the season as he tossed five innings in game one and allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts. Junior
Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) allowed just one earned run over the next three innings, while first-year
Jack Belbot (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) threw a scoreless ninth inning. Haller tallied 7.1 innings, five hits, one run and five strikeouts in game two, while Blair totaled 3.2 scoreless innings and four strikeouts.
Sophomore first baseman Connor Hall finished the day with three hits, including two in game two, and two RBI in game one. Junior third baseman Trent Hanchey tallied two hits and a run in both games, while sophomore shortstop Samuel Kasprow and senior left fielder Garrett Lyons each had two hits, one run and one RBI in game one.
Senior Robert Cook (3-3) suffered the game-one loss for the Marlins, as he went five innings and allowed six runs on 10 hits. The game two starter, senior CJ Morris, pitched 10 inning and allowed one run on six hits while getting a no-decision.
