ASHLAND, Va. – The No. 3 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored 14 unanswered goals to end the game in a 23-5 road victory over Randolph-Macon on Tuesday evening.
The Generals (10-2, 4-0 ODAC) scored first on an unassisted goal by junior attacker
Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton). After a Yellow Jackets' (4-6, 1-1 ODAC) goal, Schwab scored again to kickstart a 4-0 run for W&L to take a 5-1 lead. Randolph-Macon then scored three straight to counter and pull back within a goal at the 14:20 mark of the second quarter.
From that point on, W&L outscored the Yellow Jackets by an 18-1 margin, including the final 14 goals of the game while allowing none in the second half.
Schwab added two assists to finish the game with four points, while sophomore attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville) led the team with five points on the strength of four goals and one assist. Junior midfielder
Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) tied Bishop with four goals for the game high, as her four scores came on just four shot attempts in the game.
Sophomore defender
Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) and Schwab led the way defensively with three caused turnovers each, with Rovegno picking up a team-high three ground balls to two for Schwab. Sophomore midfielder
Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) totaled a team-best six draw controls, while Rovegno and sophomore attacker
Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley School) each won three.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) (9-2) earned the win after playing the first 49:54 and allowing five goals with two saves. Sophomore
Stefanie Chiguluri (Fairview, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) (5:30) and senior
Sam Sunar (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) (4:36) covered the final 10:06 in goal and did not face a shot on goal.
The Yellow Jackets were paced on offense by first-year attacker Rianna Lowery and junior midfielder Logan Schweiger, who both tallied two points. Lowery assisted on two goals, while Schweiger scored once and assisted on another. Sophomore defender Rachel Gibson led the team with three ground balls and senior midfielder Lily Henderson notched a team-high six draw controls.
Senior goalkeeper Caraline Cypher (4-6) played the first three quarters, and she allowed 16 goals and made six saves. Sophomore Emma Taylor played the final period and allowed seven goals.
W&L held advantages in the game in shots (41-7), ground balls (19-7) and draw controls (18-12).
The Generals will return to action on Saturday, April 16, when they travel to Guilford for a 3:00 pm ODAC contest.
