W&L Women's Lacrosse Overwhelms Virginia Wesleyan, 23-1

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Fifth-ranked Washington and Lee limited Virginia Wesleyan to just one goal on only four total shots, recording a 23-1 win over the Marlins in women's lacrosse on Saturday afternoon at Birdsong Field.
 
The Marlins (8-8, 5-3) managed just one first-half shot, as the Generals (15-2, 8-0) easily built a 15-0 halftime lead.  Sophomore midfielder Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) got things started just 40 seconds into the game when she scored unassisted.  W&L would add eight more goals on the offensive end before the end of the quarter for a 9-0 edge after 15 minutes.  On the defensive end, W&L forced 12 VWU turnovers in the frame.
 
Sophomore attacker Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley School) recorded two goals and two assists in the first quarter barrage, while senior attacker Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va. / Episcopal) and junior midfielder Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) added two goals each.  Senior attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) also chipped in one goal and two assists in the opening 15 minutes of play.
 
Stillwell and Faria each scored again in a six-goal second quarter for W&L.  Conversely, the Marlins achieved their first shot attempt of the game with four seconds remaining in the half.
 
First-year midfielder Caroline Foster (Princeton, N.J. / The Lawrenceville School) scored two of W&L's four third quarter goals, while sophomore midfielder Ginny Taylor (Madison, N.J. / Madison) racked up a pair of assists in the penultimate quarter.
 
Virginia Wesleyan finally got on the board with 11:19 left in the fourth quarter, when sophomore attacker Helen Kennedy-Butler found the net off an assist from junior attacker Mikayla Szudera to make the score 20-1.
 
Stillwell and Foster each scored three goals to pace the Washington and Lee offense.  Faria and Thomson both finished with two goals and two assists, while Taylor posted one goal and three assists.  First-year midfielder Claire Horner (Richmond, Va. / St. Catherine's School) contributed a career-best four assists and junior attacker Tati Monteleone (New York, N.Y. / Hackley School) provided one goal and two helpers.
 
Senior defender Caroline Hall (Henrico, Va. / Collegiate School) produced a team-best three caused turnovers and picked up two ground balls, while first-year midfielder Cat Caples (Reisterstown, Md. / St. Paul's School for Girls) claimed a team-best six draw controls and she added one goal as well.
 
Sophomore Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy), senior Sam Sunar (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) and sophomore Stefanie Chiguluri (Fairview, Tenn. / Harpeth Hall) all played in goal for the Blue & White.  Kranich played the first 21:12 without facing a shot. Sunar played the next 18:16, making one save, while Chiguluri played the final 20:32.  She had one save and one goal allowed.
 
Three keepers also played for the Marlins, combining to make six saves.

Washington and Lee has now finished its regular season schedule.  The Generals will be the top seed for the ODAC Tournament and will host the semifinals next Saturday, and the championship game on Sunday.  Game times and opponents are still to be determined.
