BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team used a 10-2 run from the third to seventh to move past Bridgewater, 12-8, on Wednesday in its final ODAC game of the regular season.
The Generals improve to 18-14 overall with the win and end their conference season with a record of 12-8. The Eagles fall to 23-14 overall and 10-8 in the ODAC with the loss.
After the Generals had claimed a 2-1 lead through the top of the second inning, Bridgewater plated three in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore catcher Brandan Hartman contributed to two of the runs on a home run to center, before senior left fielder Jarret Biesecker doubled home a run.
W&L then recorded its first of two four-run innings in the top of the third to regain a lead. First-year catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) grounded out to score a run, before sophomore designated hitter
Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) and junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) each singled runs in, as W&L took a 6-4 lead.
After the Eagles tied the game with a two-run fourth, the Generals scored another four runs in the top of sixth to begin to pull away from Bridgewater. Run-scoring knocks in the inning went to senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) and Larsen, while the final two runs in the frame scored on a throwing error. The Generals added another two runs in the top of the seventh to run their lead to 12-6.
Bridgewater scored its final two runs in the seventh and ninth innings on a single by junior catcher Jonathan Sexton and a solo home run by junior designated hitter Hunter Clever.
Larsen, Wickman and Salvino all finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the W&L offense, while Larsen scored three times. Junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) tallied a game-high three hits and also scored four runs.
First-year right-hander
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) (4-3) earned the win after entering the game in the fourth with no outs and tossing the final six innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out five to earn his fourth win of the season.
Biesecker finished 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run, while Clever also went 2-for-5 and scored twice. Sexton notched two hits in three at-bats with a run and an RBI, and first-year second baseman Camden Herron went 2-for-4 with a run. Senior lefty Tucker Hrasky (3-1) took the loss on the mound after he gave up four runs (two earned) on four hits in one inning pitched.
The Generals will close out their regular season on Saturday when they face Emory & Henry in a doubleheader at 12:00 pm. Both games have been designated as seven-inning contests.
