LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team launched four home runs to power their way to a home doubleheader sweep of Emory & Henry on Saturday to end the 2022 regular season, winning both games, 7-3.
The Generals close their regular season at 20-14 overall with the win, their first 20-win season since 2017, while the Wasps close the season at 9-28 overall with the loss.
W&L jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the opener, as sophomore
Jacob Jackson (Norfolk, Va. / Maury) blasted a two-run home run to left to open the scoring in the first inning. Sophomore catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) added the team's third run on a single up the middle later in the inning.
The Wasps got two runs back in the top of the second on a single by first-year center fielder Will Jennings and an RBI fielder's choice by first-year catcher Josh Howard. Junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) then extended the W&L lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the second when he hit a two-run home run to left center field, before senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) made it a 6-2 game with a run-scoring double later in the frame.
Sophomore third baseman Jared Foley scored the Wasps' final run in the top of the third on a throwing error, while Jackson scored W&L's final run in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch.
Salvino led off the bottom of the first inning of game two with his second home run of the day, and sophomore shortstop
Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C. / Weddington) singled home a run to give W&L a 2-0 lead through the first. After an E&H run in the top of the second, the Generals scored three more runs in the bottom half of the second, one on a Salvino single and two on a pair of fielder's choice plays, to take a 5-1 lead.
Sophomore third baseman
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School) was responsible for the final two W&L runs, as he hit a solo home run in the third and doubled in a run in the fifth. The Wasps scored their final runs of the day in the sixth and seventh innings on a fielder's choice and a ground out, respectively.
Sophomore left-hander
Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) (5-3) pitched strongly in game two to earn the win, as he allowed two unearned runs on four hits across 5.1 innings, with two walks and six strikeouts. Haller, at one point, also set down 12 consecutive batters.
Salvino went 3-for-6 across the two games with two home runs, his fourth and fifth of the season, and he drove in four runs and scored three times. Zulueta logged a team-high four hits on the day, including a 3-for-3 performance in game two, while first-year catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) went 2-for-3 with two runs in game two. In game one, eight of the nine starting batters for the Generals notched at least one hit, with Wickman providing a multi-hit game.
First-year righty
John Benner (McLean, Va. / St. Albans) improved to 6-0 on the mound this season with a four-inning outing in the opener. He allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with nine strikeouts, including four straight to start the game. First-year southpaw
Matt Fleming (Houston, Texas / St. John's School) and sophomore righty
Ashwin Suresh (Glen Allen, Va. / Douglas S. Freeman) covered the final three scoreless innings, and allowed three hits with three strikeouts.
Jennings went 2-for-3 in both games to lead the E&H offense, with an RBI in both contests and a run scored in game two. Sophomore shortstop Kolby Anderson logged one hit in both games and drove in a run in game two.
On the mound, sophomore Will Clark (4-4) and junior Jack Singleton (0-3) suffered losses. Clark allowed six runs on six hits in two innings in the first game, while Singleton surrendered five runs on five hits in two frames in game two.
The Generals now await results from around the ODAC today to see what seed they will earn for next weekend's Opening Series of the ODAC Baseball Championship.
