No. 3 Generals' Rally Falls Short in 13-12 Loss to No. 4 Gettysburg

LEXINGTON, Va. — The third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team scored four goals over the final six minutes of the game, but ran out of time in a 13-12 loss to fourth-ranked Gettysburg on Sunday at Watt Field.

The Generals (2-2) held a 4-3 lead with 54 seconds left in the first, following a free-position goal by sophomore midfielder Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall). The Bullets (4-0) then scored as time expired in the period, which started a 7-0 run spanning the entire second quarter and the first four minutes of the third.

At the conclusion of its spurt, Gettysburg held a 10-4 advantage with 11:18 remaining in the third. The Blue and White scored two of the final three goals of the period to close the gap to 10-6 entering the fourth.

Sophomore midfielder Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y./Hackley School) and senior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) started the final quarter with back-to-back goals to bring the Generals to within three (11-8) with 13:04 left in the contest. Gettysburg answered with two of its own to stretch the lead back to five, 13-8, with 7:03 on the clock.

Off a free position shot with 5:38 remaining, sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) scored to pull W&L to within four, 13-9. McKnight followed with her third goal of the game with 2:47 left to trim the deficit to three (13-10).

Thomson then scored with 20 seconds on the clock off a feed from Bishop to cut the margin to two, 13-11. Junior midfielder Blake Cote (Bedford, N.Y./Westminster School) won the ensuing draw control and passed to Thomson on the right side.

Racing down the field, Thomson sent the ball to the center of the eight-meter arc, where junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) made a leaping catch. Schwab quickly found her footing and beat the keeper to the right with five seconds left to pull W&L to within one (13-12). The Generals then ran out of time, as the Bullets secured the draw control with the clock hitting zero to win the game.

McKnight and Bishop each led the Generals with three goals with Bishop adding an assist. Thomson and Schwab ended the game with two goals and one assist each. Sophomore defender Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) paced W&L with eight draw controls and two caused turnovers. Cote had four draw controls and one caused turnover.

Sophomore attacker Jordan Basso led the Bullets with three goals and three assists for six points. Senior attacker Maddi Seibel and junior midfielder Katie Fullowan each added three goals.

The Generals led in draw controls, 19-9, but Gettysburg held an edge in ground balls, 16-11.

Sophomore Stefanie Chiguluri (Fairview, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) saw the final 30 minutes of action, making five saves with four goals allowed.
