HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team rebounded from a 7-3 game one loss at Hampden-Sydney with a 21-6 victory to earn a doubleheader split on the road on Saturday.
The Generals (6-5, 1-1 ODAC) built up a quick 6-0 lead in the day's second game through two innings after scoring three runs in each of the first two innings. Running-scoring knocks in the first two frames came via doubles from junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) and senior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H. / St. Paul's School) and a single from junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison).
The Tigers got on the board with a run in the bottom of the second, but W&L kept rolling with four more runs in the third on two singles and two doubles, followed by another three scores across the fourth and fifth innings. H-SC held W&L off the board again until the ninth, while scoring four runs, before the Generals hung eight on the Tigers in the final frame to eliminate any chance of a comeback. The ninth was highlighted by a two-run single from Erdmann and a two-run triple from sophomore designated hitter
Julian Domenech (New York, N.Y. / Hunter College).
The Generals fell behind by a 4-0 score in the first game, which included a three-run first from the Tigers. Senior first baseman Trey Karnes doubled in the first run, followed by a two-run single from junior catcher Ethan Currin. First-year second baseman Jaxon Masterson then drove in the team's fourth run in the fourth inning on a bunt.
W&L countered with a three-run fifth inning to get back within a run. The runs were scored on consecutive singles from senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional), sophomore designated hitter
Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) and sophomore catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va./John Champe).
H-SC shut W&L out the rest of the opener, however, and added two runs in the fifth and one in the eighth. First-year Johnny Oates tripled home a run in the fifth and followed that with a solo home run in the eighth.
Erdmann led the way for the W&L offense with eight total hits on the day, including a 5-for-7, five-RBI performance in game two. Sophomore shortstop
Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C. / Weddington) had three hits in both games and totaled two runs and two RBI, Wickman went 6-for-10 on the day with three runs and three RBI and first-year catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) went 3-for-7 with two doubles, three RBI and three runs in game two.
Sophomore center fielder
Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) also logged a pair of multi-hit games, going 4-for-7 with two doubles, three walks, four runs and an RBI.
Sophomore southpaw
Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) (2-1) earned the game-two win after allowing four runs on six hits across six innings of work, with four strikeouts. First-year
Jack Cope (Chevy Chase, Md./Landon School) (1-2) was the game one pitcher of record for W&L after he allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits in 3.1 innings. Junior
Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) came on in relief and covered the final 4.2 innings while allowing three runs on five hits.
Currin and Oates highlighted the game-one offense for the Tigers, as they both went 2-for-4 and combined for five RBI and two runs scored. Junior shortstop Ryan Boyce went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs in game two.
Senior Nic Graziano (1-1) earned the game-one win after tossing six innings and allowing three runs on 10 hits, before junior Justin Woodall and senior Kieran Conway combined for three scoreless innings to close the game. Junior Owen Tappy (1-2) was the losing pitcher in game two, as he allowed six earned runs in two innings.
