LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) and first-year pitcher
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) highlighted the Washington and Lee baseball team's 6-5 comeback win over No. 18 Shenandoah on Tuesday evening.
Trailing by a score of 4-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Generals (7-5, 2-1 ODAC) began their comeback with a pair of runs to pull back within a run. Wickman hit a sac fly to deep center and senior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H. / St. Paul's School) later singled with two outs for the team's third run of the game.
In the seventh, W&L added three more runs, all with two outs, to gain a 6-4 advantage. Junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) singled to center to tie the game, followed by a single to right off the bat of junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) to take a 5-4 lead. Wickman then doubled to left center to drive in his third run of the game and give the Generals a two-run lead.
The Hornets (10-4, 0-1 ODAC) got a run back in the top of the eighth on an RBI single from senior second baseman Kyle Lisa to make it a 6-5 game. In the ninth, Shenandoah threatened for more offense after a lead-off double by graduate third baseman Ryan Clawson. However, Blair (1-1) proceeded to force a pop out and two consecutive strikeouts to end the game and give W&L the win.
W&L was first to dent the scoreboard when Wickman blasted a solo home run to left field on the first pitch of his at-bat in the bottom of the first. The Hornets were held off the board until the fourth inning, when junior left fielder Haden Madagan homered to left, followed by a three-run shot from Lisa in the top of the fifth to put the team up, 4-1.
Wickman was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and a run scored to lead the offense. Erdmann also finished with three hits, including a double, and he scored twice. In total, eight Generals recorded at least one hit in the game, with five of the team's 12 total hits going for extra bases.
Blair earned the win on the mound after he pitched the final five innings and allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts. First-year right-hander
John Benner (McLean, Va. / St. Albans) started the game and worked the first four innings, while allowing four earned runs.
Three Hornets tallied three hits in the game, led by Lisa who drove in four of the team's five runs. Senior shortstop Frankie Ritter notched three hits and scored twice and graduate center fielder Henry Delavergne finished with three hits and one run.
Junior right-hander Mike Verzaleno (1-1) was the pitcher of record for Shenandoah, as he allowed two runs on four hits in one inning of work. Senior righty Calvin Pastel started and received a no-decision after he surrendered three runs on five hits in 5.2 innings, with no walks and four strikeouts.
The Generals will be back at home for their next matchup, a doubleheader against Randolph-Macon on Saturday beginning at 12:00 pm.
