LEXINGTON Va. — The third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team totaled a season-best 18 caused turnovers to defeat Roanoke, 12-8, on Wednesday night at Watt Field.
The teams were tied, 2-2, through the first 19 minutes of the contest, but a goal by senior attacker
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) started a 7-0 spurt for the Generals (8-2, 2-0 ODAC) that ran through the first nine minutes of the third.
After Faria's tally, sophomore attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) and senior attacker
Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) scored to push W&L in front, 5-2, with 3:23 left in the second. Senior midfielder
McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) registered the final goal of the half off an assist from Bishop with 2:21 on the clock to give the Blue and White a 6-2 edge at the break.
A pair of goals from sophomore midfielder
Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall), sandwiched around a Bishop score, capped the Generals' run and stretched the lead to 9-2 with 5:53 remaining in the third. The Maroons (5-3, 1-1 ODAC) notched the next two tallies, but junior midfielder
Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) finished off the third with a goal on an assist from Stillwell to extend the W&L lead to 10-4.
Roanoke outscored the Blue and White, 4-2, in the fourth to reach the final margin, 12-8.
The 18 caused turnovers by the Generals were the most for the team since totaling 21 in a 20-0 victory at Hollins on April 17, 2014.
Lisovicz and sophomore defender
Allie Doyle (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) led the Blue and White with four caused turnovers each, while sophomore defender
Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) registered three. Rovegno also had six draw controls.
W&L had five players with two goals. Bishop and Stillwell also added two assists to each of their tallies to finished with four points. Lisovicz and Faria each recorded two goals and one assist, while McKnight ended the night with two goals and six draw controls.
Sophomore
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played the entire game, making three saves. Sophomore Kyleigh Chickering saw all 60 minutes of action, stopping eight shots.
Senior midfielder Molly Kasemeyer led Roanoke with three goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Lilly Blair chipped in two goals and two assists.
W&L led in shots, 25-14, and draw controls, 15-9. The Maroons totaled 21 ground balls compared to 17 for the Blue and White.
The Generals return to action on Saturday against Lynchburg for Senior Day at 1:00 pm.
