No. 5 Generals Defeat No. 11 York (Pa.), 12-7

YORK, Pa. — The fifth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team closed the game on a 5-1 run to earn a 12-7 victory at 11th-ranked York (Pa.) on Saturday.
 
The contest was tied, 2-2, after the first period, but the Generals (7-2) opened the second with three straight goals, one each from senior attacker Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal), junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) and sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville). The Spartans (4-4) answered with two goals of their own to trim the deficit to 5-4 with 2:28 left in the half.
 
In the final two minutes of the period, W&L regained a three-point edge (7-4), as senior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and junior midfielder Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) each scored. York answered once again at the start of the third, tallying two goals to pull to within one, 7-6, with 5:32 left in the quarter.
 
The Generals registered the next four goals, with two from Bishop and two from Schwab, to extend their margin to 11-6 with 7:37 remaining in the contest. The Spartans added one more tally with 3:24 left in the game, but sophomore midfielder Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) answered with a free-position goal to reach the final margin, 12-7.
 
Schwab led the team with six points on three goals and three assists. Bishop finished with four goals, while Stillwell had two goals and two assists. Lisovicz added one goal and one assist.
 
Sophomore defender Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) led the team with four draw controls and two caused turnovers. McKnight had one goal and three draw controls.
 
Senior midfielder Teresa Matthias notched four goals to pace York. Sophomore attacker Logan Ward contributed four assists.
 
Sophomore Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played the entire game in goal, making seven saves. She also led the team with six ground balls. Junior Bella Garabo saw all 60 minutes of action for the Spartans, totaling 11 saves.
 
The team stats were fairly even for the game. W&L led in shots, 27-25, while York had an 11-10 edge in draw controls. Each team corralled 17 ground balls, while the Spartans had 15 turnovers compared to 12 for the Blue and White.
 
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, hosting Roanoke at 7:00 pm.
