Strong second half carries No. 5 W&L to 10-5 win over Williams

LEXINGTON, Va. – The No. 5 Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a 5-0 third-quarter run and allowed just one second-half goal to defeat Williams, 10-5, on Wilson Field on Wednesday evening.
 
The Generals (6-2) held a 5-4 lead entering the second half when sophomore attacker Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y. / Hackley School) kickstarted the team's 5-0 run with a goal just under five minutes in the third quarter. Sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y. / Bronxville), sophomore midfielder Shannon Timoney (Mendham, N.J. / West Morris Mendham) and junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa. / Harriton) then scored one goal each in succession to give W&L a 9-4 lead.
 
Thomson added her second goal of the game with 3:37 remaining in the game to cap the 5-0 run, before senior midfielder Madison Fulcher-Melendy tallied the Ephs' (0-4) final goal with 1:25 left. In total, W&L held Williams off the board for a 32:26 stretch from the end of the second quarter until Fulcher-Melendy's goal in the fourth.
 
Bishop put the Generals on the board first with an unassisted goal at the 7:05 mark of the opening frame. After first-year midfielder Claudia Russell tied the game just 22 seconds later, Schwab and junior midfielder Jenny Lisovicz (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) scored once each to put W&L ahead, 3-1, with 13:53 left to play in the second quarter.
 
The teams then alternated scoring the next five goals, leaving W&L ahead by a 5-4 count heading into halftime.
 
Schwab tallied a team-high five points on three goals and two assists, while Bishop scored twice and assisted on a goal for a three-point performance. Lisovicz and Thomson rounded out the multi-point efforts from the Generals with two goals each, as seven different W&L players logged at least one point.
 
Lisovicz added a team-best five ground balls and four caused turnovers, while sophomore defender Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass. / Duxbury) won five draw controls, picked up four ground balls and caused two turnovers.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa. / Mercersburg Academy) (5-2) played all 60 minutes in net and made seven saves to earn the win.
 
For the Ephs, Fulcher-Melendy and first-year midfielder Grace Collier tallied two goals each, while Russell added the fifth goal. Sophomore midfielder Abby Godwin led Williams with four ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Caitlyn Joyce (0-4) suffered the loss in goal, as she made four saves and allowed five goals in playing the first half. Sophomore Anj Raman played in goal in the second half and made two saves.
 
W&L led the game in shots, 24-16, ground balls, 21-17, and draw controls, 13-6.
 
The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to No. 11 York (Pa.) for a 12:00 pm start.
