Generals' bats ignite in 15-3 win over Mary Baldwin

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team cruised to a 15-3 win over Mary Baldwin behind an 11-run sixth inning at home on Wednesday.

The win improves the Generals' overall record to 5-4, while the loss drops the Fighting Squirrels to 2-6 overall.

Leading by a score of 4-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth, the Generals increased their lead by three with three straight bases-loaded walks. After a ground out brought in another run, senior designated hitter Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) doubled home a pair of runs to put W&L up by a 10-2 score. Sophomore first baseman Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va./Deep Run) then singled home one run, before he eventually came around to score on a passed ball.

Junior left fielder John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J./Delaware Valley Regional) capped the 11-run inning with a three-run home run to left field for his first career home run.

The Fighting Squirrels scored the game's first two runs in the top of the first on a single by sophomore catcher Jared Mayhew and an RBI fielder's choice from senior first baseman Dylan Rankin. W&L countered with a pair of sac flies off the bat of sophomore shortstop Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) in the second and fourth innings to tie the game.

The Generals added a pair of runs in the fifth on a double by sophomore center fielder Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and a ground out by first-year right fielder Jack Belbot (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield). Mary Baldwin scored its final run in the top of the seventh inning, courtesy of a double by junior left fielder Noah Kessler.

Eight of the nine W&L starting hitters recorded at least one RBI in the game, led by three from Raymond's round tripper. Larsen went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs and Wickman notched a 2-for-4 day with two RBI and a run. Satterfield and sophomore second baseman Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School) both went 1-for-3 with a walk each, with Satterfield scoring twice and driving in a pair and Senders scoring twice and recording one RBI.

First-year right-hander Jimmy Horvath (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) (1-0) earned the win after working 4.2 innings of relief and allowing one run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts. First-year righty Andrew Flood (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset Secondary School) started and worked the first inning, before junior righty Derek Hughes (Raleigh, N.C./Ravenscroft School) pitched a scoreless second with two strikeouts. Junior right-hander Stewart Long (Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) recorded the final out of the game.

Mary Baldwin sophomore center fielder Michael Robertson recorded two hits and scored twice, while Kessler and Mayhew each tallied one hit and one RBI. Senior right-hander Kyle Measell (1-1) last five innings and surrendered seven runs (five earned) on six hits and two walks. W&L tagged the Mary Baldwin bullpen for eight runs on four hits and four walks.

This marked the first time since April 1 of 2015 that no W&L hitter struck out in a game.

The Generals will return to the diamond on Saturday when they travel to Hampden-Sydney for an ODAC doubleheader beginning at 11:00 am.
