Thomson Propels No. 4 Generals to 16-6 Win Over CNU

LEXINGTON, Va. — Sophomore midfielder Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y./Hackley School) registered a career-best six points to propel the fourth-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team to a 16-6 victory over Christopher Newport on Saturday at Watt Field.
 
The Captains (3-4) scored the first goal of the contest, but the Generals (5-2) answered with five straight to take a 5-1 lead after the first period. Sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) registered two of the goals and Thomson had one goal and one assist.
 
CNU tallied the opening goal of the second, but once again the Blue and White went on a run, scoring five of the final six goals of the half to assume a 10-3 lead at the break. In the second, Bishop and junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) each added one goal and one assist.
 
In the second half, W&L continued to build its lead, outscoring the Captains, 6-3, to reach the final margin of 16-6.
 
Thomson totaled three goals and three assists to notch her six points. Schwab finished with two goals and two assists, while Bishop had three goals and one assist. First-year attacker Caroline Foster (Princeton, N.J./The Lawrenceville School) added two goals and one assist, and senior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) recorded one goal and one assist.
 
Sophomore defender Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) registered her first collegiate assist, to go with a team-best five draw controls and two ground balls. Junior defender Caroline Wise (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) and sophomore defender Allie Doyle (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) each had two caused turnovers.
 
The Generals led in shots, 34-15, and had a 16-11 advantage in ground balls.
 
Sophomore Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played the first 46:39 in goal, stopping six shots with four goals allowed. Senior goalkeeper Lizzie Burgyone played the first half for CNU, making two saves with 10 goals allowed. First-year Izzy Shefrin saw the final 30 minutes of action with one save and six goals allowed.
 
Senior midfielder Kendall Krause led the Captains with three goals, while junior attacker Kelsey Winters had two goals and two assists.
 
The Generals return to action on Wednesday, hosting Williams at 5:30 pm.
