Generals swept in road doubleheader against No. 6 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on the road against No. 6 Lynchburg on Saturday, falling by scores of 14-3 and 6-2.

The Hornets (14-3, 4-0 ODAC) put up six runs in the second inning of game one, with sophomore shortstop Ryan Long putting the first two runs on the board on a single. Senior right fielder Cameron Lane then drove in another two runs on a single, before a double from first-year designated hitter Logan Webster and senior first baseman Garrett Jackson drove in one run each on a double and a sac fly.

The Generals (8-9, 3-5 ODAC) got two runs back in the top of the third on a single from sophomore right fielder Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) and a double play ground ball. However, the Hornets continued their scoring with at least one run in each inning from the fourth to the eighth, including three in the fourth and two in the seventh.

W&L scored its third run of the opener on a double down the right field line from sophomore shortstop Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C. / Weddington).

Jackson opened the scoring in game two with an RBI double to right in the first. Senior second baseman PJ Alvanos then laced a 3-2 pitch to left center in the third inning to score three runs and give Lynchburg a 4-0 lead. Lane added an RBI single in the fourth, before he later scored in the seventh on a throwing error, capping the Lynchburg scoring in game two.

W&L put a pair of runs across home plate in the top of the eighth when first-year catcher Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) hit a sac fly to score junior third baseman Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison), and Zulueta singled home senior second baseman Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H. / St. Paul's School).

Zulueta had two hits and an RBI in both games, while Erdmann tallied two hits in game two and Bassi had two hits in game one. Satterfield and sophomore catcher Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) both went 1-for-3 in the opener, with Keuhner scoring once and Satterfield driving in one run.

First-year Jack Cope (Chevy Chase, Md. / Landon School) (1-3) started game one and allowed eight runs across 3.1 innings on seven hits with three strikeouts, while sophomore Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) (2-2) allowed six runs (one earned) on eight hits in six innings of work in game two. First-year Evan Blair (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) relieved Haller and pitched two scoreless innings with one hit allowed and three strikeouts.

Lane went 3-for-4 in both games to lead the Lynchburg offense. He scored twice and drove in four in game one, before scoring twice and driving in another in the second game. Alvanos tallied three hits between the two games and drove in five runs, while junior left fielder Avery Neaves walked three times and scored three times in the first game.

Junior Zack Potts (4-1) earned the win in game one after he allowed one earned run on eight hits in eight innings, while adding eight strikeouts. Sophomore Nick Mattfield (3-0) earned the game-two win with five scoreless innings, two hits and two walks allowed and six strikeouts. Junior Jack Bachmore pitched two scoreless innings to follow Mattfield, before the Generals got to senior Grayson Thurman for two runs on three hits over the final two innings.
