WINCHESTER, Va. – Sophomore second baseman
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School) hit a go-ahead three-run home run with two outs in the ninth inning to break a 2-2 tie and push the Washington and Lee baseball team to a 5-2 upset-win over No. 14 Shenandoah on Tuesday afternoon.
The top of the ninth began with two of W&L's (9-9, 4-5 ODAC) first three hitters recording an out, with first-year catcher
Campbell Charneco (Clifton, Va. / Centreville) logging a single to left. After a walk to sophomore right fielder
Mason Satterfield (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) extended the inning, Senders followed with his first career home run to give the Generals the final lead of the game.
First-year right-hander
John Benner (McLean, Va. / St. Albans) remained in the game entering the bottom of the ninth and recorded two quick outs. The Hornets (15-6, 2-2 ODAC) put the pressure on by bringing the tying run to the plate after a single and an error, but Benner then struck out graduate third baseman Ryan Clawson looking to end the contest and record the complete game.
Charneco put the Generals on the board first with an RBI ground out in the top of the fourth to score senior designated hitter
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H. / St. Paul's School). The Hornets scored both of their runs in the fifth inning on a two-run home run to left off the bat of Kyle Lisa. Bassi then tied the score with a solo home run to left in the top of the sixth.
Benner (3-0) earned the win on the mound as he needed just 97 pitches to record W&L's first complete game since Tom Concklin '17 went the distance against Hampden-Sydney on May 5, 2017. Benner allowed two earned runs on four hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. With zero walks allowed, Benner joins Concklin as the only W&L pitchers over the last 14 seasons to finish a complete game with no walks.
Bassi had a team-high three hits and scored twice, while Senders added a single to go with his three-run home run. Charneco also tallied two hits, with one run and an RBI.
Lisa, Clawson, senior first baseman Pearce Bucher and graduate center fielder Henry Delavergne notched one hit each to total the four Shenandoah hits on the day.
Senior Calvin Pastel started on the mound for Shenandoah and received a no-decision after he allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits over the first seven innings. Senior Tad Dean (0-2) was tagged with the loss after he allowed Charneco and Satterfield to reach base in the ninth. Senior Matt House relieved Dean, but allowed the Senders home run before getting out of the top of the ninth.
This marks W&L's first regular season sweep of Shenandoah in program history, a series that has dated back to 1988.
The Generals will be back in action on Thursday when they host Tufts in a 4:00 pm matchup.
