Generals fall on walk-off, 10-9, at Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. – After rallying to tie the game in the top of the ninth, the Washington and Lee baseball team fell by a 10-9 score on the road against Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday evening.

Trailing by a 9-8 mark heading to the top of the ninth, W&L (8-7, 3-3 ODAC) senior first baseman Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J./Hunterdon Central Regional) doubled to center with one out, and was pinch run for by sophomore Zach Senders (Potomac, Md./Bullis School). Senders advanced to third in the next at-bat on a passed ball, before a throwing error by the catcher on a pick-off attempt to first with two outs brought Senders home to tie the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, sophomore second baseman Ethan Spraker reached on an infield single, but advanced to second on an error. Senior third baseman Ethan Dahloff then reached on a throwing error, which allowed Spraker to come home and score the winning run.

With the game tied at four runs a side to start the seventh, junior left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) singled to bring home junior third baseman Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) to give the Generals a 5-4 lead. Senior second baseman Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H./St. Paul's School) then doubled home Perkins, before junior center fielder Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Catholic) launched a two-run home run to left center to put W&L up by four runs.

The Royals (5-9, 2-1 ODAC) were quick to counter, however, as they scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to regain a one-run lead. First-year Drew Petitt and fifth-year first baseman Blake Sargent hit consecutive run-scoring singles in the inning before a two-run knock off the bat of Dahllof.

Wickman finished the game with a team-high three hits with one run scored, while Charneco, Erdmann and Perkins each tallied two hits, with Erdmann and Charneco both scoring twice. Sophomore shortstop Ethan Zulueta (Matthews, N.C./Weddington) went 1-for-4 with a two-run single in the sixth, and Salvino's two-run home run extended his hitting streak to 18 straight games.

First-year Jimmy Horvath (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) (0-1) was charged with the loss on the mound, as the right-handed reliever allowed one unearned run on one hit in 1.2 innings, in addition to two walks and three strikeouts.

Spraker totaled three hits and three runs to lead the EMU offense, with Lindsay, Sargent and fifth-year catcher Ray Tricarico each finishing with two hits and combining for five runs and three RBI. Petitt also scored twice and drove in one run.

Senior righty Daniel Hupart (1-0) was credited with the win after he allowed one unearned run in the ninth inning on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Hupart was preceded by sophomore Adrian Abad who pitched two scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

The Generals will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lynchburg for an ODAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
