BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Washington and Lee men's basketball team's held Bridgewater to just 25.7 percent from the field in the first half on its way to an 84-66 victory at Nininger Hall on Tuesday.
The Generals (9-9, 7-5 ODAC) jumped out to an early 17-6 lead in the first six minutes of the game, but the Eagles (8-11, 4-7 ODAC) trimmed the deficit to 24-18 with 7:48 left in the opening stanza following a jumper by first-year guard Shod Smith.
The Blue and White then stretched the lead to 17 points (35-18) with an 11-0 run over the next four minutes. Sophomore forward
Jack d'Entremont (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) scored six of the points, and senior guard
Tevin Panchal (Belmont, Calif./Sacred Heart Prep) notched the other five. W&L maintained its margin heading into halftime, 43-26.
The W&L defense held Bridgewater to just 9-of-35 (25.7 percent) from the field in the first 20 minutes and 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) from beyond the arc. Conversely, the Generals hit 48.4 percent (15-of-31) of their shots from the floor and 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from long range.
The Eagles opened the second with an 11-2 spurt to trim the deficit to 45-37 with 17:18 remaining on the clock, but the Generals answered by scoring eight of the next 10 points to regain a 14-point lead (53-39) with 14:27 left in the contest. W&L held a double-digit advantage the rest of the way in securing the 18-point victory.
Sophomore forward
Robert DiSibio (Sandy Hook, Conn./Newtown) and d'Entremont each totaled 17 points to lead the Blue and White. DiSibio shot 7-of-13 from the floor, while d'Entremont grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Senior guard
Mark Lamendola (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) made 5-of-6 of his attempts to record 12 points, and junior guard
Sam Wise (Winchester, Va./John Handley) had nine points, four rebounds and five assists. Junior guard
Richie Manigault (Stewartsville, N.J./Phillipsburg) finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
Smith tallied 17 points and six rebounds to lead the Eagles, and senior guard Andy Pack added 16 points and four rebounds.
The Generals play at Ferrum on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
