W&L Men's Lacrosse Cruises to a 17-7 Win Over Washington College

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee jumped out to an 8-1 lead and cruised to a 17-7 victory over Washington College in men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
 
The Generals (1-2) have now won four straight and six of the last seven in the long-standing series between the two teams.
 
Senior midfielder Fenner Pollock (Nashville, Tenn. / Montgomery Bell Academy) got W&L on the board when he scored unassisted at the 12:31 mark of the first quarter and just 22 seconds later, senior midfielder Teddy Bentley (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. / Cold Spring Harbor) found the net unassisted for a 2-0 lead.
 
The Shoremen (0-1) responded at 10:50 when sophomore attackman Trevor Ivatts scored unassisted, but W&L senior midfielder Braden Rhone (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal) scored goals at 6:48 and 6:01 to give the Generals a 4-1 lead after the first quarter.
 
The Blue & White opened the second stanza with a four-goal run that featured goals by four different players.  Rhone scored his third tally of the contest during the stretch, while senior attackman Taylor Witherell (Wilmington, Del. / Salesianum) scored the first of his three goals on the day.  Sophomore midfielder Sam Mannino (Fair Haven, N.J. / Rumson Fair Haven) and junior midfielder Henry Holliday (Washington, D.C. / St. Albans) both added a score during the run that helped the Generals to a 9-2 halftime advantage.
 
Witherell opened the second half with goals at 10:29 and 4:46, sparking a 5-0 surge for W&L that gave it a commanding 14-2 lead entering the final period of play.
 
W&L held advantages of 40-37 in shots and 16-12 in faceoffs.  Washington College won the ground ball battle, 38-30.
 
Witherell led the way with three goals and one assist, while Rhone posted three tallies.  Bentley scored two goals and Holliday finished with one goal and two assists.  Pollock added one goal and one assist as well.
 
Senior Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) played the first 51:59 in goal to earn the win for W&L.  He finished with 10 saves and three goals allowed.  Junior Warren Seeds (Atlanta, Ga. / Westminster) played 6:25, making one save with four goals allowed, and first-year Keene Cornick (Alexandria, Va. / St. Stephen's & St. Agnes) played the final 1:36 without neeing to make a save.
 
Ivatts and first-year midfielder Cory Morgan both scored two goals to lead Washington College.  Senior attackman Ewan Temple added three assists and senior Ryan Leahy played a majority of the game in goal (51:59), making nine saves with 16 goals allowed.
 
Washington and Lee will return to action next Saturday when it hosts Denison University for a 1:00 pm contest.
