LEXINGTON, Va. – The 18th-ranked Denison men's lacrosse team rode an eight-goal run across the second and third periods to post an 11-7 victory over Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Big Red (3-0) led 2-0 early in the first quarter, but the Generals (1-3) scored two of the last three goals of the opening frame to make it a 3-2 contest. Sophomore attackman
Alex Brown (Norwalk, Conn. / Taft School) got W&L on the board with 1:58 left in the first quarter when he scored off an assist from junior midfielder
Braden Rhone (Dallas, Texas / Episcopal). The Big Red responded 57 seconds later, but W&L first-year attackman
Hillis Burns (Louisville, Ky. / St. Xavier) scored unassisted with 13 seconds left to make it a 3-2 game entering the second quarter.
Denison got its run started just 16 seconds into the second quarter when junior attackman Ethan Tyack scored off an assist from sophomore midfielder Nathan Kay. Tyack would assist on two others, while Kay would scored two goals himself during the run that turned a 3-2 game into an 11-2 game with 5:32 remaining in the third period.
The Generals recovered from the Denison run with 1:47 left in the third quarter when Rhone found the back of the net off an assist from junior midfielder
Adam Lamberti (Bel Air, Md. / McDonogh). Rhone's goal keyed a 5-0 W&L run to end the game, but the Blue & White's comeback ran out of time.
Denison out-shot the Generals, 48-42, and the Big Red also held advantages of 37-30 in ground balls and 12-10 in faceoffs. Denison also went 3-for-5 on EMO, while the Generals were 0-for-3.
Rhone paced W&L with two goals and one assist, while five others scored one goal each. Senior goalkeeper
Nick Spagnoletti (Madison, N.J. / Madison) totaled 11 saves.
Denison was led by Tyack, who notched two goals and two assists. Kay had two goals and one assist, while sophomore midfielder Clyde Bresnahan chipped in two goals. Senior T.J. Spahn stopped 14 shots in goal.
Washington and Lee will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Baldwin Wallace for a 7:00 pm contest.
