SALISBURY, Md. — Top-ranked Salisbury held off the third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team, 7-6, on Saturday at Sea Gull Stadium.
The Generals (2-1) trailed, 5-4, entering the fourth quarter, and the Sea Gulls (3-0) extended their advantage to 6-4 on a goal by senior attacker Lily Cavallaro with 12:13 remaining in the contest.
Sophomore midfielder
Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y./Hackley School) tallied back-to-back goals to even the contest, 6-6. The first came with 10:57 on the clock on a free-position attempt, and her second came just over a minute later on another free-position chance.
Salisbury won the ensuring draw control and then Cavallaro scored off an assist from junior attacker Erin Scannell with nine minutes left to give the Sea Gulls a 7-6 edge. The Blue and White had opportunities over the rest of the fourth to secure the equalizer, but could not convert.
Sophomore attacker
Alex Petras (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) took the team's final shot with 4:48 left in the game, but senior goalkeeper Mary Claire Hisle made the stop. W&L last chance came with 14 ticks on the clock after forcing a turnover in its defensive end. The Generals attempted to quickly change ends of the field, but turned it over as the clock expired.
Thomson and sophomore attacker
Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) each scored two goals to pace the Blue and White. Senior attackers
McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) and
Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) both registered one tally. Sophomore defender
Eugenie Rovegno (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) led the defense with five draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played all 60 minutes, making four saves. Her counterpart, Hisle, stopped seven shots while playing the entire contest.
Scannell led Salisbury with five points on three goals and two assists. Cavallaro finished with two goals and two assists.
The Sea Gulls had a slight edge in shots, 21-18. The Blue and White led in ground balls, 18-16, and draw controls, 10-7, but W&L had 15 turnovers compared to 10 for Salisbury.
The Generals next game is at home against ninth-ranked Gettysburg on Sunday, March 6 at 12:00 pm.
