Generals bested by No. 3 Marietta to close out D3 Showcase

KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – The Washington and Lee baseball team closed out its trip to Kannapolis with a 17-0 defeat against third-ranked Marietta on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Generals now sit at 4-4 overall with the loss, while the Pioneers improve to 2-1 overall with the win.
 
Marietta opened the contest with three runs in the top of the first inning. Senior third baseman Damian Yenzi scored the game's first run on a ground out, before senior first baseman Drew Holderbach scored from third on an error. Senior center field Trent Castle then singled to bring in the Pioneers' third run.
 
The Pioneers opened their lead to 10 runs with a seven-run fourth inning. Senior right fielder Turner Hill doubled in two runs, while the big blow in the inning was a three-run home run to left off the bat of senior designated hitter Logan Vietmeier. Marietta added at least one run in each inning from the fifth to the eighth, including three in the sixth and two in the seventh.
 
Hill, Holderbach and Castle all had three hits in the game for the Marietta offense. Hill finished with a double, three RBI and two runs, Holderbach drove in one run and scored three times and Castle scored twice and had one RBI. Vietmeier finished with four RBI and Yenzi tallied two hits, two runs and one RBI.
 
W&L junior left fielder Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va./James Madison) went 2-for-4 on the day, and he was one of seven Generals with a base knock. Sophomore left-hander Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) (1-1) was the W&L pitcher of record, as he allowed five runs (four earned) on four hits in 3.1 innings.
 
Senior left-hander Brett Carson (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Marietta after he pitched five scoreless inning and allowed four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in the start. Senior righty Isaac Danford, first-year southpaw Jacob Rocky and first-year righty Ty Davis covered the final four innings and surrendered four hits.
 
The Generals were scheduled to next play on Sunday at 10:00 am against Christopher Newport in the final day of the D3 Showcase. That game has been canceled due to the forecast of inclement weather. W&L will make its return to the diamond on Wednesday when it hosts Mary Baldwin at 3:30 pm.
