First-Half Run Sends No. 3 Generals Past Eagles, 14-7

LEXINGTON, Va. — The third-ranked Washington and Lee women's lacrosse team used a 9-0 run over the first and second periods to take control of the contest on its way to a 14-7 victory against Mary Washington on Wednesday at Watt Field.
 
The Generals (2-0) and the Eagles (0-1) were tied, 1-1, after the first three minutes of the game, but then a tally by sophomore midfielder Walker McKnight (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) with 11:36 left in the first ignited the game-deciding 9-0 spurt.
 
Junior attacker Allie Schwab (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Harriton) followed with the next two goals and then the final score of the first came from sophomore attacker Hanna Bishop (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) to push the Blue and White in front, 5-1.
 
Senior attacker Katherine Faria (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) started the second with a goal just 1:43 into the period, and a tally by sophomore midfielder Shannon Timoney (Mendham, N.J./West Morris Mendham) stretched the margin to 7-1 with 8:34 left in the half.
 
Sophomore midfielder Julia Thomson (Larchmont, N.Y./Hackley School) then scored her first goal of the year, with Schwab notching her third goal of the contest with 6:42 on the clock. Bishop capped the onslaught (10-1) with her second of the evening just 35 seconds after Schwab's goal.
 
UMW ended its scoring drought with 2:05 remaining in the second off the stick of sophomore attacker Katie Blair to bring the halftime total to 10-2. W&L subbed liberally in the second half with the Eagles winning the last two quarters, 5-4, to reach the final margin.
 
Schwab led the team with four goals and one assist for five points. Bishop had two goals and one assist, while McKnight and Thomson each had two tallies. Senior attacker Janie Stillwell (Alexandria, Va./Episcopal) led the Generals with two assists.
 
Senior midfielder McKenna Edmondson (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) notched a team-best four draw controls, while sophomore defender Allie Doyle (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had three ground balls.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Kranich (State College, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) played the first 50:04 in goal, making eight saves with four goals allowed. Senior Sam Sunar (Montville, N.J./Mountain Lakes) saw 4:05 of action with one save, and sophomore Stefanie Chiguluri (Fairview, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) played the final 5:51.
 
Senior attacker Rebecca Pullen led UMW with three goals on three shots. Sophomore attacker Bridget Crowley added three assists. Senior Reilly Miller played the full 60 minutes in goal with 10 saves.
 
The Blue and White led in shots, 32-17, draw controls, 16-8, and ground balls, 16-9.
 
The Generals return to action on Saturday, playing at top-ranked Salisbury at 12:00 pm.
