BREVARD, N.C. – After coming back from six runs down, the Washington and Lee baseball team surrendered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to fall, 8-7, to Brevard on Sunday afternoon.
Trailing by a 6-0 score through five innings, the Generals (3-2) scored two runs each in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to tie the game. Junior center fielder
Mitchell Salvino (Charlotte, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) tripled in a run in the sixth, followed by an RBI single from sophomore catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va. / John Champe). In the seventh, senior second baseman
Chapin Bassi (Concord, N.H. / St. Paul's School) drove in a run on a sacrifice fly before Salvino plated another run to cut the deficit to two runs.
Junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va./James Madison) tripled in the first run of the eighth, followed by an error that allowed Erdmann to score the tying run.
The Tornados (6-1) answered with a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the eighth, but the Generals knotted the game at seven runs apiece in the top of the ninth when sophomore
Drew Larsen (Glen Allen, Va. / Deep Run) hit a sac fly to left.
Brevard put a runner on third with one out in the ninth after a walk, sac bunt and wild pitch. Following two intentional walks and a strikeout, senior shortstop Jason Jucker reached on an infield single, allowing junior Joe Pledger to score the winning run.
The Tornados struck for five runs in the bottom of the third to open the scoring. The frame was highlighted by a two-run single from sophomore left fielder Logan Clark. The inning's first run was scored on a fielder's choice, with two more runs scoring on a walk and a hit by pitch. First-year third baseman Luke Morton drove in the team's sixth run in the bottom of the fifth on a ground out to the pitcher.
Salvino and Keuhner led the W&L offense with three hits each, plus three RBI and two runs combined. Erdmann finished the day with two hits, two runs and an RBI, and Bassi logged two hits and an RBI as well. Senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) reached base three times on two hits and a walk, and he scored twice.
Sophomore left-hander
Thomas Haller (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) started and allowed five runs on four hits across the opening 2.2 innings. The W&L bullpen held Brevard scoreless over the next 4.1 on just one hit, but sophomore righty
Ashwin Suresh (Glen Allen, Va. / Douglas S. Freeman) (0-1) was the losing pitcher with two runs allowed on two hits over the final 1.2 innings.
Clark paced the Brevard offense with a 1-for-3, three-RBI day at the plate. Jucker went 1-for-5 with two RBI and junior Blake Burchett tallied three knocks, one run and one RBI.
Senior right-hander Matthew Scavotto started and tossed five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. First-year righty Jacob Thompson was tagged for four runs on six hits over 1.2 innings, while sophomore lefty Cesar Rodriguez surrendered two runs on five hits across 1.1 frames. Senior righty Bryce Bowers (1-0) earned the win, and he allowed one run on two hits in one inning of work.
The Generals will be back in action on Monday when they complete their three-game series at Brevard. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
