BREVARD, N.C. – The Washington and Lee baseball team scored the first 11 runs of the game and went on to defeat Brevard, 14-7, on Monday afternoon.
The Generals (4-2) scored in each of the first six innings, with multiple runs in five of the six. Junior left fielder
Zach Perkins (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) started things off with an RBI double in the first, before scoring on a ground out. Two more runs came across in the second, including one on a single to left center off the bat of junior
John Raymond (Frenchtown, N.J. / Delaware Valley Regional). In the third, W&L opened the lead to 7-0 with runs scoring on an error, a wild pitch and a ground out.
Senior first baseman
Brian Wickman (Whitehouse Station, N.J. / Hunterdon Central Regional) knocked in two runs on a single in the top of the fourth, followed by a run-scoring infield single by sophomore shortstop
Zach Senders (Potomac, Md. / Bullis School). A sac fly by first-year right fielder
Mike Carpenter (Aurora, Ohio / Aurora) then pushed W&L out to an 11-0 advantage.
The Tornados (6-2) got two runs back in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth on two singles, before Wickman drove in another run in the fifth, while Raymond and junior third baseman
Luke Erdmann (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) added the final W&L runs in the sixth on a single and a sac fly, respectively.
Brevard added five late runs to bring the score to its final total, with three runs in the seventh and two in the eighth. Senior Jason Jucker drove in a run on a single and later scored on a triple by sophomore Logan Clark. Clark then scored on a sac fly from first-year Cale Oehler. The final two runs came across on an RBI triple in the eighth from first-year pinch hitter Jonathan Graves, who later scored on a wild pitch.
Erdmann and Wickman led the W&L offense on the day with seven combined hits. Erdmann went 4-for-5 with a triple, one RBI and three runs scored, while Wickman tallied a 3-for-6 game with three RBI and two runs. Senders and Raymond also notched two hits each and combined for three runs and three RBI, while sophomore catcher
Jaden Keuhner (Aldie, Va. / John Champe) went 2-for-5 with two runs.
On the mound, first-year righty
John Benner (McLean, Va. / St. Albans) (2-0) earned the win after working six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Junior right-hander
Stewart Long (Missoula, Mont. / Hellgate) and first-year left-hander
Matt Fleming (Houston, Texas / St. John's School) allowed five runs on five hits in the seventh and eighth innings, before first-year righty
Evan Blair (Vienna, Va. / James Madison) closed the game with two strikeouts in a perfect ninth.
Jucker finished 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI for Brevard, and Clark went 1-for-3 with a triple, a walk, one RBI and two runs scored. Junior second baseman Blake Burchett and junior first baseman Kenneth Pridmore also collected two hits each for Brevard.
Oehler (0-1) started and took the loss after he allowed three earned runs on four hits over the first two innings. Senior righty Bryce Bowers and first-year lefty Noah Webb then allowed a combined 10 runs (nine earned) over the next 3.1 innings, before sophomore right-hander Cameron Cook allowed no runs over the final 3.2 frames.
The Generals will be back in action on Friday when they face Keystone at 6:00 pm to begin play in the D3 Showcase at Atrium Health Ballpark in Kannapolis, N.C.
